Houston's Late Rally Falls Short in Series Finale

HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball's late-game rally fell just short as San Diego managed to hold on for a 7-4 win over the Cougars in the series finale at Schroeder Park Sunday.

The Cougars fell to 8-7 on the year, while San Diego improved to 9-7 with the win. Houston won the weekend series, 2-1.

Houston starter Ryan Randel lasted 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts to fall to 1-2 on the year.

Brayson Hurdsman worked 1.0 inning, allowing three runs on four hits, while Kyle Ott tossed 0.2 innings with one hit, one walk and one strikeout.

Dylan Lester threw 1.0 shutout inning in relief before handing the ball over to senior Joey Pulido.

Pulido tossed the final inning, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.


KEY INNINGS
2nd | San Diego used a three hits and took advantage of a Houston error to plate the game's first run in the second for the 1-0 lead.

4th | The Toreros added to their lead in the fourth with a run following a leadoff double and RBI-sac bunt to make it a 2-0 game.

6th | San Diego goes up 3-0 after a leadoff double and squeeze bunt in the sixth inning.

7th | Four hits led to three more runs in the seventh for San Diego as it extended its lead to 6-0.

8th | Houston found the run column with four runs in the eighth to trim San Diego's lead by two at 6-4.

Grayson Padgett walked and with one out, Landon Etzel singled to put runners at first and third. After a flyout, Lael Lockhart Jr. picked up his second hit of the day with an RBI-single up the middle, scoring Padgett to make it 6-1. Nick Slaughter followed with an RBI-single to plate Etzel for the second run.

Houston made it interesting as Jared Triolo and Cooper Coldiron each drew a bases loaded walk to make it 6-4.

9th | San Diego responded to Houston's eighth-inning rally with two hits in the ninth to plate one run to go up 7-4 with three outs to play.


ON DECK
Houston will travel to Lake Charles, La. for a midweek road tilt against McNeese at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Cougars will then return home to host a mini-round robin format at Schroeder Park between Houston, Columbia and New Mexico next weekend, March 16-18.
