IRVINE, Calif. - University of Houston sophomore righthander Ricky Hargrove held UC Irvine to only one unearned run in seven innings of work to help lead the Cougars to a 7-1 win Saturday in the second game of a non-conference series at Anteater Field.

Hargrove, who improved to 2-1 with the win, struck out three and scattered four hits while throwing only 74 pitches. The Katy, Texas, native faced only three batters over the minimum.

The Cougars (11-8) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first five-and-a-half innings and never looked back in winning their second straight against UC Irvine.

For the fourth straight game, the Cougar offense pounded out double-digit hits. Senior infielder Isa Garcia went 3-for-4 with three runs and a stole base to lead the attack, while junior infielder Dustin Kingsbury went 2-for-3 with a run, triple and RBI. Freshman catcher Luis Flores also batted 2-for-4 with a team-high two RBIs.

UCI starter Glenn Swanson collected the loss and dropped to 2-2 after giving up six runs (four earned) off nine hits with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

The Cougars will look to complete the series sweep at 3 p.m. (CST), Sunday. That game can be heard live on with former letterwinners Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action. Fans also can follow live stats by clicking on the "Gametracker" link at

Freshman righthander Luis Flores is scheduled to take the hill for the Cougars in the series finale. This season, he has pitched to a 1-1 record with 17 strikeouts and a 2.60 ERA in 17.1 innings.

UC Irvine will counter with righthander Scott Gorgen, who has compiled a 3-1 record with 20 strikeouts and a team-best 2.16 ERA in 33.1 innings of work.

The Cougars grabbed the early lead with a run in the first inning. After leading off with a single for the second straight night, Garcia moved into scoring position following Bryan Tully's sacrifice bunt. Kingsbury then hit a seeing-eye-single up the middle to plate Garcia and hand the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, UH added two more runs, thanks to a hit and UCI infield error. After reaching on an effort, Garcia moved up to second base when Brad Lincoln was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and scored on Flores' single up the middle.

The Cougar pushed two more runs across in the fifth inning. Garcia and Tully started the rally with back-to-back singles and moved up following Kingsbury's sacrifice bunt. Lincoln then plated Garcia with an infield single, and Jake Stewart's sacrifice fly to center field allowed Tully to score for a 5-0 UH lead.

Sophomore outfielder Mark McGonigle pushed Houston lead to 6-0 in the sixth inning after blasting an 0-1 offering over the left-field wall for his first career home run.

UCI struck for its first run in the bottom of the inning when Cody Cipriano's RBI-single to left field, plated Gary Dudrey, who reached on a Cougar error in the outfield.

Kingsbury, who reached on a one-out triple, scored on UCI's second error of the night in the ninth inning to cap the Cougars' scoring.

In the ninth inning, the Anteaters rallied with two runs, courtesy of a passed ball and pinch hitter Zach Robinson's looping RBI-single into shallow left field. However, that would be as close as UC Irvine would get the rest of the way.
