Long Beach State Edges Baseball in Bottom of Ninth
March 13, 2005
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Cole Jacobsen's two-out triple in the bottom of the ninth scored two runs and lifted No. 35 Long Beach State to a 5-4 win over the University of Houston baseball team in the finale of a non-conference series at Blair Field.
The Dirtbags staged a two-out rally to get the win and win the series against the Cougars. Tom Wolf started the rally with a single to left field and moved all the way to third base when Zach Barger slapped a single into right center.
Jacobsen then laced a triple just out of reach of UH's diving left fielder Kori Williams, allowing pinch runner Donnie Ecker to score the tying run from third base and pinch runner Danny Mocny to race in all the way from first base with the winning run.
The Cougars had jumped out to a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning when Mark McGonigle slapped a one-out, two-run double down the left field line.
The loss spoiled a solid performance from UH starter Brad Lincoln, who allowed only five runs (four earned) off 10 hits with eight strikeouts in 8.2 innings of work. LBSU reliever Brian Anderson improved to 2-0 after holding the Cougars to only one hit with a strikeout in three shutout innings.
Zach Barger went 3-for-4 to lead the Dirtbag offense, which outhit the Cougars 10-7. Evan Longoria also finished the game 2-for-4. No Cougar had more than one hit in the game, while McGonigle led UH with a pair of RBIs.
The Cougars now travel to Midland, Texas, where they will meet No. 21 Texas Tech at 7 p.m., Tuesday at First American Bank Ballpark. This marks the second consecutive season that the Cougars will meet the Red Raiders at that facility.

For the fourth consecutive game, the Cougars struck for the game's first run with a singe run in the second inning. Bryan Pounds reached on an infield single and moved into scoring position on an errant pickoff throw from Hughes. After Dustin Kingsbury was hit by a pitch, Brett Logan slapped an RBI-single up the middle to score Pounds.
In the fourth inning, the Cougars doubled their lead. Kevin Roberts led off with a sharp single to left field, stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Kingsbury bounced a high chopper over the head of a drawn-in LBSU infield to score Roberts.
The Dirtbags took the lead in the next half inning thanks to three hits and a Cougar error. Jamie Huizar put LBSU on the scoreboard with an RBI-double. Chris Jones then lifted a two-run single into center field to score Brandon Godfrey and Huizar and give LBSU a 3-2 lead.
McGonigle gave the Cougars the lead in the sixth inning with a two-run double. After Pounds drew a one-out walk and Kingsbury was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game, both runners moved up on a balk by Hughes. Following a pitching change, McGonigle ripped the second pitch he saw from reliever Donnie Hume down the left field line to plate both runners and hand the Cougars a 4-3 advantage.
