HOUSTON -- Highlighted by five RBI and two home runs by junior Jake Scheiner, Houston Baseball was able to escape a late McNeese rally and earn a 6-5 win on Tuesday at Schroeder Park.

The win was the 10th of the year for the Cougars as they improve to 10-5 overall and 7-2 at home. McNeese's eight-game win streak was snapped with the loss as it fell to 12-5 on the year.

  • Connor Wong has reached base in 14 of Houston's 15 games.
  • Joe Davis extends his on-base streak to 11 straight games with his single.
  • Cougars are now 7-2 at home this season.

Starter Trey Cumbie went 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, one walk with four strikeouts to earn his second straight win, improving to 2-0 on the season.

Freshman reliever Carter Henry took over in the seventh with two runners on and helped Houston escape the jam, retiring the next two hitters -- keeping McNeese off the board. He went into the ninth, but was lifted after McNeese pulled within one run on a two-run home run late.

Henry handed the ball to sophomore Aaron Fletcher, who struck out a pair and induced a game-ending flyout to preserve the win and notch his team-leading third save of the year.

1st | McNeese jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on two base hits, but Houston responded in dramatic fashion as Scheiner belted a three-run home run, scoring Padgett, who reached on an error and Davis, who singled for the 3-1 lead.

3rd | McNeese scored a pair of runs in the third to tie the game at 3-3, but in the bottom half of the frame, the Cougars quickly regained the lead on Scheiner's second home run of the game as he drilled the ball into the center field's batter eye, plating Padgett -- who opened the inning with a leadoff single.

4th | The Cougars added their sixth run of the game to extend the lead to 6-3 when Wong doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Davis RBI-groundout.

9th | McNeese made things interesting in the top of the ninth as a leadoff single gave way to a two-run home run as the Cowboys pulled within one, but Fletcher came in and shut McNeese down, helping the Cougars to the one-run win.

McNeese's eight-game win streak was snapped with the loss on Tuesday as the Cowboys fell to 12-5. Starter Tyler Wesley was tagged with the loss, falling to 1-1 on the year, allowing four earned runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts. McNeese tallied eight hits, led by Shane Selman, who belted a two-run home run in the ninth.

The Cougars welcome Alabama State to town for a three-game series this weekend at Schroeder Park.
