Houston Opens Series with 10-2 Win

HOUSTON -- Sparked by a five-run fourth inning, Houston Baseball opened its three-game series with Alabama State with a 10-2 win on Friday evening at Schroeder Park.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 11-5 overall and 8-2 at home, while Alabama State fell to 7-12 with the loss.


  • Seth Romero fanned 12 hitters in Friday's win and has at least 10 strikeouts in all five starts this season.
  • Romero has eight career games of at least 10 strikeouts and that is tied for third all-time.
  • Romero has now totaled 262 career strikeouts and sits fourth all-time.
  • Connor Wong has reached base in 15 of Houston's 16 games.
  • Wong led the Cougars at the plate with three hits, three runs and three RBI.
  • Joe Davis extends his on-base streak to 12 straight games with his single.

Starter Seth Romero struck out 12 Hornets en route to his third win of the year. The southpaw allowed just one run on four hits and two walks in 6.0 innings of work. His 12 strikeouts ties a season-high and Friday's win became the fifth straight start with at least 10 strikeouts for the West Columbia, Texas native.

Freshman Fred Villarreal took over for Romero to start the seventh inning and went a career-long 3.0 innings, earning his first career save for the Cougars. The righty allowed one run on four hits with one strikeout.

1st | Alabama State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI-double after a one-out walk, but Romero worked out of the jam and stranded bases loaded.

4th | Houston used a five-hit fourth inning to plate five runs to go ahead, 5-1. Scheiner got things going with a leadoff triple and with one out, the Cougars rattled off a pair of hits by Triolo and Lockhart, while Hollis reached on a hit-by-pitch. With two outs, Wong doubled and Padgett singled -- each driving in runs.

6th | Houston extends its lead to 8-1 with a three runs in the sixth, thanks to a two-run home run by Connor Wong -- his third of the year -- plating Jordan Monacy, who walked with two outs and an RBI-single by Scheiner, scoring Padgett -- who helped extend the inning with a base hit.

9th | Alabama State scored a run in the ninth following a three-hit inning.

Alabama State fell to 7-12 on the year. The Hornets tallied eight hits, led by Gustavo Rios and Cage Cox, who each had three hits and an RBI. Starter Tyler Howe allowed four earned runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings in the loss.

The Cougars and Hornets continue the three-game series at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and wrap at 12 p.m. Sunday.
