HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Cougars earned a 4-1 series-clinching win over Alabama State on Saturday at Schroeder Park.
With the win, the Cougars have now won four straight and improved to 12-5 overall and 9-2 at home, while Alabama State fell to 7-13 with the loss.
- Connor Wong has reached base in 16 of Houston's 17 games.
- Joe Davis extends his on-base streak to 13 straight games after being hit-by-a-pitch in the fifth.
- Jake Scheiner belted his team-leading fifth home run of the year and led the Cougars with a three-hit night.
- Corey Julks drove in a pair of runs, which proved to be the game-winners.
- Cougars are now 9-2 at home this season.
Starter Mitch Ullom improved to 2-2 on the year with another impressive showing, tossing 7.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Aaron Fletcher relieved Ullom in the eighth inning and held Alabama State scoreless in his 1.2 innings in relief, where he picked up his team-leading fourth save of the season.
4th | Houston broke open the scoreless game in the fourth thanks to a Julks' two-run single, scoring Lockhart, who led off with a walk and Monacy, who notched his first career double.
5th | The Cougars added to their lead in the fifth with a run on a Lockhart RBI-single, plating Davis -- who opened the inning with a hit-by-pitch.
6th | Alabama State opens the sixth with three straight hits, but only was able to bring one run home as Ullom induced a double play (5-4-2) and a foul out to end the frame, holding the Cougars' lead at 3-1.
7th | Scheiner belts a no-doubter solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh and extend the Cougars' lead by three at 4-1. The home run was the fifth of the season for Scheiner.
ALABAMA STATE NOTES
Alabama State fell to 7-13 with the loss and starter Burke Echelmeier suffered the loss after allowing three runs on six hits with three walks in 5.0 innings. The Hornets were led by Edgardo Rivera, who went 2-for-3 with a run.
Houston and Alabama State will wrap up its three-game series at Noon on Sunday at Schroeder Park.
Following Sunday's series finale, the Cougars will travel to Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. midweek first pitch and return home to host Texas Southern at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Schroeder Park.
