HOUSTON - Lance Pendleton blasted an RBI-double in the top of the 11th inning to score Paul Janish and lead Rice to a 7-6 win over the University of Houston baseball team Wednesday in Game Three of the Silver Glove Series at Cougar Field.

The Owl rally started when Janish reached base after striking out on a wild third strike and eventually raced all the way home on Pendleton's extra-base hit.

With the win, the Owls won their third straight game over the Cougars this season and clinched the Silver Glove trophy for the third consecutive year. A weary Cougar team also played its fourth extra-inning game of the season and its third extra-inning contest in the last four outings.

The loss spoiled a valiant comeback by the Cougars who trailed 6-0 after the first four-and-a-half innings before eventually chipping away and tying the game in the bottom of the seventh. And despite the loss, the Cougar offense continued to show promising signs of breaking out of its early offensive slump, rapping out 13 hits in the contest.

For the second game in a row, junior outfielder Travis Tully rapped out three hits and added a run and RBI. Gabe Lucas and Nick Bott each batted 2-for-5 while Thanos Papavasiliou went 2-for-6 with a run and team-best two RBIs.

UH reliever Ryan Wagner dropped to 0-4 this season after giving up only one run off two hits in 3.1 innings of work. Rice reliever David Aardsma improved to 0-4 by tossing 4.2 innings of shutout ball with only two hits.

Austin Davis went 3-for-6 with a run, while Craig Stansberry batted 2-for-5 with two runs, a home run and three RBIs for the Owls.

The Owls took the lead in the second inning when Jeff Blackinton drew a bases loaded walk to score Austin Davis. In the fourth inning, the Owls struck again with two more runs, thanks to Enrique Cruz's RBI-triple and Chris Kolkhorst's sacrifice fly.

Rice pushed its advantage to 6-0 in the fifth inning on Stansberry's three-run homer to left field. But the Cougars got on the scoreboard in the next half inning with four runs. Brett Logan led off with a single through the left side of the infield and moved to second base on Tully's single to left center.

Gabe Lucas then laced a single to right field to plate Logan and give UH its first run of the game. Papavasiliou cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line, just out of reach of Rice's diving left fielder Chris Kolkhorst.

In the fifth inning, the Cougars pulled to within a run. Logan struck out but reached base and advanced to second when Blackinton's throw to first base went down the right field line. Tully then lifted a looping single into short center field to plate Logan and pull the Cougars to within 6-5.

UH tied the score at 6-6 in the seventh inning. After Matt Farrington led off with a single and moved into scoring position following a walk to Brian Martin, Bott slapped an Aardsma offering through the right side of the infield to score Farrington.

The Cougars will hit the road this weekend to meet Conference USA rival Cincinnati in a three-game series. The series begins at 1 p.m. (CST) Friday and continues at noon (CST) Saturday before wrapping up at 10 a.m. (CST) Sunday.
