Houston Completes Sweep of Alabama State

HOUSTON -- Highlighted by 19 hits and three home runs by Jake Scheiner, Houston Baseball earned a weekend series sweep of Alabama State following a 19-11 rout on Sunday at Schroeder Park.

With the win, the Cougars have now won five straight games and improve to 13-5 overall and 10-2 at home, while Alabama State fell to 7-14 with the loss.

Houston belted four home runs, led by Scheiner's three and mustered up 19 hits as six Cougars tallied a multi-hit game and seven with an RBI. Scheiner was a perfect 5-for-5 with four runs, seven RBI on three home runs, while Davis finished 4-for-5 with four runs and four RBI to pace the offense.

Senior starter John King was provided early run support in his third win of the year, moving to 3-0 after surrendering five earned runs on 10 hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.

Sophomore Nolan Bond tossed 2.2 innings in relief, allowing no earned runs on five hits with one strikeout.

Bond would hand the ball over to freshman reliever Brayson Hurdman with two outs in the eighth, but Alabama State forced another pitching change and the Cougars went to junior Joey Pulido, who tossed the final 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk with three strikeouts to close it out.

1st | Houston scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first after Davis doubled and advanced the next two bases on back-to-back wild pitches for the 1-0 lead.

2nd | The Cougars added to their lead with a three-run second frame, as Davis drove in a pair of runs on a single -- scoring Julks and Wong, who each singled. Scheiner then kept the inning alive, plating Grayson Padgett, who was hit, on an RBI-single to make it 4-0.

3rd | Alabama State scores an unearned run on an RBI-single, following a base hit and passed ball to make it a 4-1 game. Julks led off the bottom half of the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Connor Hollis, stole third and scored on a Wong RBI-groundout to extend the Cougars lead to 5-1.

4th | Houston kept its scoring streak alive with a season-high nine-run fourth inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Davis, Triolo, Wong and Scheiner. The inning concluded with a three-run home run by Scheiner -- his fourth of the week and sixth of the year.

5th | Alabama State responds to the Cougars' nine-run inning with a five-run fifth of its own to trim Houston's lead to 14-6 following five hits.

6th | Scheiner continued his offensive tear with his second home run of the day and fifth of the week with a solo shot in the sixth to put the Cougars ahead, 15-6.

7th | Grimsley would give Houston the 10-run lead with his first home run as a Cougar -- a shot shot -- to left center in the seventh.

8th | Alabama State scored five runs on five hits and a Houston error in the eighth to make it a 16-11 game. The Cougars then responded with three more runs of their own in the latter half of the frame as Davis tripled -- giving way to Scheiner -- who belted his third long ball of the game -- to make it an 18-11 score. One final run came across on a Julks' sacrifice fly, scoring Triolo -- who walked.

Alabama State fell to 7-14 on the year with the loss on Sunday. The Hornets tallied 18 hits as five players had a multi-hit game and four drove in two RBI.

Starter Terrell McCall suffered the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.

The Cougars will travel to Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. and return home to host Texas Southern at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Schroeder Park.
