HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team won its Conference USA opener 5-1 over UAB on Friday night at Cougar Field.

With the win Houston is now 10-3 all-time in league openers and improves to 5-15 on the season.

Houston was led by pitcher Wes Musick who set a career-high in strikeouts with 11. His previous best was 10 Ks against UCF on March 24, 2007. Frank Corolla, in relief, added five strikeouts. The 16 combined strikeouts is a season-high for the Cougars.

Chase Dempsay started things off reaching base on a walk in the first inning and he would score on a double to left field by Ramsey.

Houston followed that up in the second inning, loading the bases with no outs. Matt Murphy scored the Cougars' second run on a wild pitch after leading off with a walk and Taylor White followed that up scoring on a throwing error by the pitcher. David Murphy scored the final run of the inning on a ground out to first base by John Cannon.

Zak Presley gave the Cougars a fifth run in the seventh inning. He reached base on a single up the middle, stole second and third base and scored on a single to third base by Ramsey.
