March 21, 2010
Tempe, Ariz. - The University of Houston baseball team lost a heartbreaker, 6-5, in the series finale against No. 1 Arizona State on Sunday afternoon at Packard Stadium. Trailing 6-2 UH strung together a two out rally in the ninth inning that pulled them within one before it was cut short on a fielder's choice to second base. With two outs, David Murphy and Blake Kelso hit back-to-back singles to put runners in scoring position. Caleb Ramsey followed that up with an RBI single through the left side to give Houston its first run of the inning. A walk by Joel Ansley loaded the bases and M.P. Cokinos took a pitch to the arm to pull UH within two, 6-4. Zak Presley registered the second walk of the inning, plating another Cougar runner. Matt Murphy then stepped to the plate with the tying run on third base but he grounded into a fielder's choice at second base to end the game. With the loss, Houston loses the series to the Sun Devils, 3-0, and falls to 9-9 on the year. The Cougars looked poised to take the series finale on Sunday, when for the first time in the series, Houston jumped on the board first. Kelso doubled to left field in the third inning and Ramsey followed that up with a double to right field to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Arizona State, however, loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and Zack McPhee hit a double to the right field corner scoring three runs. ASU pushed their run total to five, scoring off Andrew Aplin's double and a wild pitch from Eric Brooks in the fourth inning but Ryan Still helped Houston cut the deficit to three in the fifth inning. After reaching base on a walk, Still scored off Ansley's sacrifice fly to left field. The Sun Devils then scored their final run in the seventh before Houston mounted its ninth inning rally. Matt Creel earned the start on the mound on Sunday, going 3.1 innings. He gave up five runs on five hits with a walk. Eric Brooks came in relief for the final 4.2 innings. He allowed just one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Ramsey finished the afternoon going 3-for-5 at the plate, scoring a run with two RBIs and two doubles. UP NEXT
