IRVINE, Calif. -- For the second straight day, No. 20 Houston Baseball edged No. 27 UC Irvine by one run, winning 5-4 on Saturday to earn a road series victory at Anteater Ballpark.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 17-5 on the year and are winners of nine straight games, while UC Irvine fell to 11-8 with the loss. The series loss was the first for the Anteaters at home this season.

- Jake Scheiner has reached base in 12 straight games and has hit in 10 straight.

- Mitch Ullom picked up his third win of the year, Aaron Fletcher his fifth save.

Houston racked up 11 hits in the win as junior Corey Julks drove in four RBI on three hits, two of which were doubles to lead the Cougars at the plate. He was followed by Jake Scheiner, who doubled and tallied three hits, while scoring a pair of runs. Grayson Padgett notched two doubles and scored two runs and Connor Hollis added a base hit and RBI.
Sophomore Mitch Ullom made his sixth start and showed well once again, improving to 3-2 on the year with the win. The righty allowed three earned runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work.
Sophomore reliever Aaron Fletcher took over for Ullom in the eighth and finished with four strikeouts and one walk in 1.2 innings for his fifth save of the year.
2nd | Houston jumped out to an early lead with a run in the second when Padgett doubled off the right field wall with two outs and later came around to score on a Julks' double for the 1-0 advantage.
4th | The Cougars added to their lead with a pair of runs in the fourth thanks again to a double from Julks, who plated Scheiner -- who singled and Padgett -- who doubled in the frame, giving the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
6th | Houston goes up 5-0 with a pair of runs in the sixth when Scheiner led off with a double and came around to score on a two-out RBI-single from Julks. Jordan Monacy followed with a single and Julks moved first to third on the base hit, allowing Hollis to drive him in on an RBI-single up the middle in the next at-bat for the fifth run of the game.
UC Irvine would use a two-out three-run home run to make things interesting and trim Houston's lead by two at 5-3.
8th | UC Irvine takes advantage of a Houston throwing error to plate its fourth run of the game in the eighth after a leadoff double placed the runner on base.
Fletcher would shut the Anteaters down after that, striking out the final two hitters in the eighth and two more in the ninth for the save.
