Houston Sweeps UC Irvine in Road Series

IRVINE, Calif. -- Highlighted by another complete game for senior starter John King, No. 20 Houston Baseball earned a road series sweep at No. 27 UC Irvine following a 7-3 victory on Sunday for the Cougars' 10th straight win.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 18-5 on the year and are winners of 10 straight games, while UC Irvine fell to 11-9 with the loss.

The Cougars tallied 13 hits and scored seven runs on seven RBI, led by junior Connor Wong -- who posted a four-hit day with an RBI. Seven different Cougars recorded and RBI as sophomore Grayson Padgett and freshman Jordan Monacy each had a two-hit day at the plate.

Pitching Breakdown:
John King | 9.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K

Senior John King tossed his third complete game in his last four starts, moving to 4-0 on the year. The southpaw struck out four and allowed just two earned runs on seven hits and three walks in 9.0 innings of work.


2nd | Houston jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second when Triolo led off with a hit-by-pitch, moved to second on a Padgett walk and scored on a Monacy RBI-single for the first run. The second run came on a Hollis RBI-single down the left field line, plating Padgett.

3rd | The Cougars added to their lead with a run in the third thanks to an RBI-double by Padgett, scoring Triolo -- who doubled with one out.

4th | Houston went up 4-0 after Monacy led off the frame with his second hit of the day, moved up to second on a passed ball, to third on a sacrifice bunt by Wong and scored on a two-out RBI-single by Lockhart.
UC Irvine uses a three-hit inning and takes advantage of a Houston throwing error to plate a pair of runs to make it a 4-2 game.

6th | With one out in the sixth, Wong doubles and Lockhart walks before Davis plates Wong on an RBI-single through the left side. After an intentional walk to Scheiner to load the bases, Triolo plates Lockhart on a deep flyball to center field for a sac fly, extending the lead to 6-2.
UC Irvine uses a leadoff solo home run to make it a 6-3 game in the latter half of the sixth.

7th | The Cougars plate yet another run in the seventh when Monacy scored on an RBI-single by Wong -- his fourth hit of the day -- to make it a 7-3 game.

UC Irvine, ranked as a high as No. 27 in the nation, fell to 11-9 after being swept in the weekend series by the Cougars. The sweep was the first home sweep for the Anteaters since 2014.

Starter Cole Spear suffered the loss, falling to 2-2 on the year after allowing two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. The Anteaters posted seven hits, led by Keston Hiura's two base hits, which included a solo home run.

Houston will return home to host Incarnate Word Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. before opening American play on the road at UCF next weekend.
