HOUSTON - UAB used a sacrifice fly, wild pitch and Ben McCullar's RBI-single to score three runs in the top of the 10th inning on the way to a 7-4 win over the University of Houston baseball team Saturday in the second game of a Conference USA series.
The loss spoiled a valiant comeback by the Cougars who trailed 4-0 entering the bottom of the eighth inning. In that frame, Kevin Roberts scored UH's first run on Bryan Pounds' RBI-single, and sophomore shortstop Dustin Kingsbury pulled the Cougars to within a run with a two-run double to right center.
In the ninth, the Cougars went down 1-2 quickly before staging their rally. Kevin Roberts blasted his team-leading fourth triple of the season off the wall in right center and scored the tying run when Brad Lincoln's looping single into right field fell just out of the reach of a diving Cole Helms.
However, that would be as close as the Cougars would get the rest of the way.
With the loss, the Cougars dropped to 10-14 overall and 3-2 in C-USA play. It was the team's third consecutive loss in extra innings this season and snapped a seven-game winning streak against the Blazers. In addition, the Cougars saw their 10-game home winning streak over UAB come to an end.
UAB improved to 17-6 overall, 4-1 in C-USA action.
Junior reliever Justin Vaclavik dropped to 0-1 after giving up three runs off three hits in 0.2 innings of work. UAB reliever Ryan Huffman improved to 4-0 after holding the Cougars scoreless with a strikeout over the final 1.1 innings.
Sophomore infielder Brad Lincoln went 4-for-4 with a walk, run and RBI and has reached base safely in 10 consecutive plate appearances during the UAB series. Roberts went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs to extend his hitting streak to a UH-season-best and career-best 11 consecutive games.
Junior outfielder Travis Tully also finished the day 3-for-5.
Helms went 3-for-5 with a homer, two runs and two RBIs, while Zac Ward finished the night 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs to lead UAB which recorded nine hits in the game.
The Cougars wrap up the series at 1 p.m., Sunday. That game can be heard live on KGBC 1540 AM or on the Internet at www.UHCougars.com with former Cougar letterwinners Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action. Helms gave the Blazers a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when he blasted a two-run shot over the right-field wall. One inning later, Ward doubled the UAB lead with a two-out, two-run double in the left-center gap.
