    Final Stats

HOUSTON - University of Houston sophomore righthander Brad Lincoln held No. 31 UAB to only one run and struck out a career-high nine batters to help lead the Cougars to an 8-1 win Sunday in the rubber match of a Conference USA series at Cougar Field.

Lincoln, who had lost three of his last four games entering Sunday's contest, held the Blazers hitless through the first four innings and allowed only a single run in the fifth inning on Ben McCullar's RBI-single. The Clute, Texas, native allowed only six hits and two walks in tossing his team-leading second complete game of the 2005 season.

Meanwhile, the Cougar offense scored at least one run in each of the first seven innings to win for the 11th time in their last 12 games against UAB at Cougar Field. Junior catcher Brett Logan went 3-for-3 with a run, double and RBI, while freshman infielder Bryan Pounds batted 2-for-4 with a pair of runs to top the UH offense.

Junior infielder Kevin Roberts set the tone early for the Cougars with a solo home run in the first inning and finished the night 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to a UH season- and career-best 12 consecutive games. Sophomore outfielder Jake Stewart also went 2-for-5 with a run, double and RBI as UH doubled UAB's hit total 12-6.

UAB starter Adam Price dropped to 3-2 after giving up five runs off six hits with a pair of strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.

The Cougars return to action at 7 p.m., Tuesday at Cougar Field when they meet No. 14 Rice in Game Three of the annual Sterling Bank Silver Glove Series.

That game can be heard live on KLVL 1480 AM or on the Internet at www.UHCougars.com with former Cougar letterwinners Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action. In addition, fans also can follow the action by clicking on the "Gametracker" link at www.UHCougars.com.

The Cougars will be looking for their first win in the 2005 Series after the Owls claimed one-run victories in 10 innings during each of the first two games.

The Cougars (11-14, 4-2 C-USA), struck for the game's first run in their first at bat when Roberts blasted an 0-2 offering over the right-field wall. In the second inning, Pounds laced a one-out single to right field and moved all the way to third base on Logan's double down the right field before scoring on Matt Farrington's groundout.

One inning later, the Cougars pushed their lead to 3-0 with another run off two hits. Stewart led off with a double down the right-field line. Two batters later, Lincoln blasted a double over the head of center fielder Clint Toomey to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Cougars took advantage of two hits, two balks and a UAB to put two more errors on the scoreboard. Logan led off with a single to right field and moved to second base after a failed pickoff attempt. Farrington then reached on a walk and both runners took advantage of back-to-back balks from Price to move up two bases.

Farrington then scored on Jake Stewart's single through the left side of the UAB infield.

The Blazers put their first mark on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when McCullars' RBI-single up the middle plated Seth Rollin who led off with a single.

In the sixth inning, the Cougars continued to build their lead. Mark McGonigle reached on a UAB infield error and moved into scoring position after a passed ball. Tully then blasted a double to right center to give UH a 7-1 lead.

One inning later, the UH scoring machine ended but not after a two-out rally. Pounds started with a single to right field, stole second base and capped the Cougar scoring when Logan singled into right field.
