HOUSTON - Adam Rodgers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to break a tie in the sixth inning and help lead fourth-ranked Rice to an 8-3 win over the University of Houston baseball team Tuesday in Game Three of the annual Silver Glove Series at Reckling Park.
Rice then broke the game open in the eighth inning with five runs off four hits and an error. The Cougars rallied in the ninth to score a run on Brett Cooley's RBI-single and threatened for more with the bases loaded, but Owl reliever Eddie Degerman forced a groundout to end the threat and the game.
With the win, Rice grabbed a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series and improved to 21-6 overall. UH dropped to 9-18.
UH jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first two-and-a-half innings before Rice stormed back in the bottom of the third with two runs of its own. The score remained that way until the sixth inning when Rodgers' RBI-HBP gave the Owls their first lead of the game.
UH reliever Brian Martin dropped to 0-1 after allowing one run off three walks and two hit batters in two innings of work. Rice reliever Josh Baker struck out seven batters while allowing only two hits in 5.2 shutouts to collect the win and improve to 4-2.
Chris Kolkhorst, Paul Janish and Adam Morris rapped out two hits apiece for the Owls who outhit UH 10-8. Cooley went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Cougars offensively.

The Cougars struck for the first run of the game in the second inning. Cole Bruce led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third on Rob Johnson's single into right field. Two batters later, Bruce scored and Johnson moved all the way to third base on a wild pitch from Ueckert.
In the third inning, Jake Stewart led off with a single through the right side and moved into scoring position after Roberts walked. Cooley then laced a single down the right field line to plate Stewart and hand the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
Rice knotted the game in the bottom of the inning when Austin Davis laced a two-out, two-RBI single into left center to score Adam Rodgers and Adam Morris.
After grabbing the lead, the Owls exploded for five runs in their final at-bat to put the game away. Morris slapped an RBI, and Adam Hale added an RBI-single to highlight the frame offensively for Rice, who also scored two runs on a Cougar infield error and another run on a balk.
In the ninth, Brett Logan and Patrick Gaylord drew back-to-back leadoff walks and moved up a base on the first of two Rice passed balls in the inning. After Roberts walked to load the bases, Cooley lifted an RBI-single into shallow center field for the final run of the game.
