HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team suffered a 6-0 shutout loss to Rice, Thursday night at Reckling Park, falling to 0-2 in the annual Silver Glove Series.

Joel Ansley connected on Houston's only hit in the contest, a single through the left side in the first inning. The Cougars had not been held to one hit since a 5-0 loss to East Carolina on May 23, 2003.

Houston (12-12; 2-2 C-USA) held the Owls scoreless in the first inning but surrendered a run in each of the next two innings and two runs in the fourth. A single run in the sixth and seventh innings, gave Rice their final total.

On the mound, Michael Goodnight made the start for Houston, going 3.1 innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Taylor Hammack, Tanner Shiflett and Ty Stuckey pitched the remainder of the game, giving up two runs with a strikeout.

The Cougars will look to bounce back in the three game series and try to knock off the Owls for the first time this season on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game will also air live on Comcast Sports Southwest (CSS). Check your local listings for channel information.
