Baseball Takes Big Win over UAB in Series Opener
April 2, 2004
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Houston righthander Garrett Mock allowed only three runs with six strikeouts in 7.2 innings to help lead the Cougar Baseball team to a 9-3 win over Conference USA rival UAB on Friday in the opener of a three-game series at Young Memorial Field.
With the win, Mock improved to 2-5 and enjoyed his third consecutive solid outing. During that time, the Houston native has allowed only five earned runs off 16 hits in 23.2 innings of work.
While Mock was taking care of business on the mound, the Cougar offense exploded for nine runs off 13 hits in the game. UH jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings and never looked back. All but one Cougar starter had at least one hit in the game, and that feat was accomplished by early in the fourth inning.
Jake Stewart went 3-for-5 with a run, RBI and a pair of doubles to lead the way for the Cougars. Cole Bruce, Rob Johnson and Nick Bott each added two hits, with Bott recording a game-high three RBIs, thanks in part to a two-run homer.
UAB starter Griffin Zarbough dropped to 2-1 after allowing six runs off six hits with a strikeout in only one inning of work.
Dan Stucky batted 2-for-4 with a run, and Levi Putmon came off the bench to add a team-high two RBIs in the losing effort.
The Cougars continue the series at 2 p.m., Saturday against the Blazers. The game can be heard live on 88.3 FM KAXF or over the Internet at www.UHcougars.com with Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling the action. Freshman righthander Brad Lincoln (2-1, 5.18) is scheduled to start on the hill for the Cougars. UAB is slated to throw southpaw Jacob Legg (2-1, 3.58).
The Cougars grabbed the early lead in their first at-bat with three unearned runs. Kevin Roberts reached on an infield error and moved into scoring position after Brett Cooley drew a walk. Bruce then blasted a double into right field, plating Roberts. Two batters later, Bott slapped a two-out, two-RBI single into center field to score Bruce and pinch-runner Patrick Breen.
In the second inning, the Cougars put another three-spot on the scoreboard. Brett Logan and Travis Tully led off with back-to-back singles. Stewart laid down an infield single in front of the plate, but Zarbough's throw to first base went down the right field line, allowing Logan to score. After a wild pitch allowed Tully to score, Roberts blasted a double into right field to plate Stewart and give the Cougars a 6-0 lead.
Stewart pushed the Cougar lead to 7-0 in the third inning with a double off the left field wall that allowed Stuart Musslewhite to race in from second base.
Breen drew a leadoff walk to start the fourth inning and followed that with a stolen base. Bruce then smashed an RBI-single into center field to give UH an 8-0 lead.
UAB cut into the lead in the fifth inning with three runs off four hits. Levi Patmon blasted a two-run double into the right-center gap for the first Blazer runs, and Nathan McCorkle followed with a two-RBI single up the middle.
In the seventh inning, Bott blasted a 1-1 offering off reliever Lyle Northington over the left field wall for his second home run of the season.
