New Orleans, La. - Junior Matt Creel turned in a career night on the mound to guide the University of Houston baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Tulane in their Conference USA opener Friday night at Turchin Stadium.
Creel pitched a career-long seven innings, allowing just three hits with a career-high six strikeouts to earn the shutout victory over the Green Wave. Junior Jordan Mannisto earned his second save of the season, pitching the final two innings without giving up a hit.
UH is now 11-4 all-time in Conference USA openers and 7-1 in road openers. Houston also shut out an opponent to begin league action for the first time since 2006, when they defeated Marshall 7-0 at Cougar Field.
Senior Ryan Still put the Cougars up 1-0 in the third inning. With one out, he doubled to right field and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt at second base. Still would score on freshman Landon Appling's RBI double down the left field line. Appling would go on to steal third base and score on an overthrow at third base by the catcher.
Houston will continue the series against Tulane at 2 p.m. Saturday with the finale scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
