Runte Grand Slam Propels Baseball to 8-2 Win Over UTPA
April 4, 2009
HOUSTON - Freshman Jake Runte hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to help the University of Houston baseball team earn a 8-2 win over UT Pan Am Saturday night, moving the UH to 2-0 in the series against the Broncs at Cougar Field. The grand slam was just the second hit of Runte's career. William Kankel and Taylor White opened the inning on back-to-back singles and Ty Stuckey walked to load the bases for Runte, who stepped to the plate and sent the ball sailing over the left field fence. Houston had built a one point lead entering the sixth. They scored their first run in the second inning when White reached base on a single to the shortstop. He stole second and crossed home plate on a double to left field by Stuckey. The Broncs answered in the top of the third, scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead but Houston wouldn't let them stay on top for long. In the bottom of the third, with two outs, Chris Wallace hit a double to right center, plating Chase Dempsay and Caleb Ramsey, who reached base on a walk and single, respectively. Michael Goodnight, who won his fourth weekend start, pitched seven innings, giving up four hits, two runs, one walk, while striking out a career-high tying six batters. Dempsay pitched two innings of relief, not allowing a UT Pan Am hit or run, while striking out one batter. With the win, Houston moves to 12-17 on the season and they have now won five straight games, the team's longest winning streak of the season. LOOKING AHEAD
