Long Balls Lift ECU Over Cougars, 16-1
April 6, 2012
W: Tyler Joyner (5-0)
NUMBERS OF NOTE
10 With Codey Morehouse's single, the senior has now reached base safely in 10 consecutive games for the Cougars.
2 The 16-1 loss in 7 innings was the second time this season Houston has been run-ruled, including a 17-2 loss at Southern Miss on March 24.
5 Houston has now dropped five straight C-USA games to fall to 1-7 in conference play.
GREENVILLE, N.C.--East Carolina used three homeruns and 15 hits to out slug Houston, 16-1 in seven innings on Friday evening in C-USA play.
The Cougars dropped their second straight game and fifth straight conference contest to fall to 11-18 overall and 1-7 in league action. East Carolina improved to 22-8 and 6-2 in C-USA with the win.
Houston opened with a manufactured run, executed to perfection as sophomore leadoff hitter Landon Appling reached on a single up the middle. A wild pitch took him to second, allowing senior Jake Runte to move him to third on a sacrifice bunt. Junior Chase Jensen then laid down a perfect squeeze bunt for the Cougars' first run.
However, that ended any threat Houston would attempt to make as East Carolina posted five runs of its own in the latter half of the frame on three hits, including a three-run homerun.
Senior Jordan Lewis (2.0,5,8,8,2,2) lasted only 2.0 innings in his start, allowing eight runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts for the loss, falling to 3-5 on the year.
The Pirates went on to plate three more runs in the third on two homeruns and a double, two runs in the fourth, three in the sixth, and three in the seventh.
Houston's pitching staff walked seven Pirate hitters and allowed 15 hits, five for extra bases.
The Cougars posted just six hits on the evening, led by junior Jacob Lueneburg (2x3) and Appling (2x4, R) with two hits each. Senior Codey Morehouse (1x3) extended his reaching-base streak to 10 games with a single, while Runte (1x3) contributed with a base knock as well.
East Carolina starter Tyler Joyner (7.0,6,1,1,0,5) pitched a complete game and allowed just one run on six hits with five strikeouts to improve to 5-0 this year.
