HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball used a seven-run second inning and never looked back as it scored 17 runs on 13 hits en route to a 17-3 win over East Carolina in the American Athletic Conference series opener Friday night at Schroeder Park.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 21-8 on the year and even their conference mark at 2-2, while East Carolina fell to 18-13 overall and 0-4 in league action.
The Cougars and Pirates will continue their three-game series at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and wrap at 1 p.m. Sunday at Schroeder Park.

Houston out hit East Carolina, 13-7 and plated 17 runs on 16 RBI. Five of the 13 hits were for extra bases.
Joe Davis led the Cougars' offensive attack with three hits and three RBI, which came from his second home run of the year. Connor Wong drove in four RBI and scored three runs, while Connor Hollis plated three RBI on a long ball and Rey Fuentes III three RBI on a triple.
Freshman Jared Triolo tallied three base hits and scored three runs.
Trey Cumbie earned his first Friday night start of his career and didn't disappoint as the southpaw held a very strong ECU offense to just seven hits and two earned runs, while striking out six, through 7.0 solid innings. With that effort, Cumbie improved to 5-0 on the year.
He was relieved in the eighth inning by sophomore Nolan Bond, who tossed 2.0 perfect innings out of the bullpen.
2nd | East Carolina used two doubles and took advantage of a Houston defensive miscue to plate a pair of runs and take a 2-0 lead in the second.
Despite being down by two runs, the Cougars responded with a seven-run frame that put them ahead of the Pirates, 7-2. A leadoff single by Scheiner sparked the inning and with one out, Triolo singled and Lockhart reached on an error after a sac fly. The inning continued with a HBP from Bielamowicz and another sac fly by Hollis. With two outs, Wong walked, Padgett singled before Davis belted his second home run of the year, a three-run shot for the five-run advantage.
3rd | The scoring continued for the Cougars in the third with a four-run frame, which began with back-to-back singles from Julks and Triolo and a walk from Bielamowicz set up another sac fly for Hollis before Wong blasted a three-run shot to left field for his fourth home run of the year to give the Cougars an 11-2 lead.
5th | East Carolina scored a run in the fifth on a solo home run to right center to make it an 11-3 game in Houston's favor.
The scoring continued for Houston as Hollis belted his first career home run -- a one-out solo shot to left and Scheiner drove in Wong -- who walked -- with an RBI-double for the 13-3 lead.
6th | Houston added to its lead in the sixth with one more run as Lockhart came around to score after being hit, moved to second on a Bielamowicz walk, to third on a passed ball and scored on a Wong RBI-groundout.
7th | Fuentes, off the bench, came up big with a bases-clearing, three-run triple to right field, scoring pinch runner Landon Etzel, Scheiner and Triolo -- to make it 17-3 Cougars.
EAST CAROLINA NOTES
East Carolina dropped its fifth straight game and fell to 18-13 overall and 0-4 in American play with Friday's loss. The Pirates tallied seven hits, led by T.J. Riles' 2-for-3 game with two runs and an RBI.
Pirate reliever Jake Agnos suffered the loss after allowing three runs on one hit in 0.2 innings of work to fall to 1-2 on the year.
