April 8, 2011
HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team dropped its series opener, 10-1, to the UAB Blazers Friday night at Cougar Field. The loss is the first in Conference USA play for the Cougars and they are now 16-16 on the year and 3-1 in league play. The Blazers jumped on the Cougars early, posting two runs to open the game. Jamal Austin scored the leadoff runner with a sacrifice fly to right field and Patrick Palmeiro hit a home run to left field. Junior Codey Morehouse was able to pull UH within one, 2-1, in the third inning with a home run to left field, his first of the season, but that would be the only run that the Cougars would be able to score in the contest. UAB added six runs in the fifth inning and closed out the night with two runs in the sixth inning. Junior Matt Creel dropped to 4-4 on the mound, allowing eight runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings. Freshman Chase Wellbrock turned in 1.1 innings of relief, giving up two runs on two hits with four strikeouts. Freshman Dustin Fuerst closed out the final three innings in a career-long outing. He also struck out a career-high two batters. At the plate, Morehouse went 2-for-3 with a home run, RBI and he scored a run. UP NEXT
