NACOGDOCHES, Texas - University of Houston pitchers Donnie Joseph, Barry Laird, Chris Wright and Bryan Tully combined to limit Stephen F. Austin to only five hits in a 4-0 shutout win at Jaycees Field on Tuesday.

Laird earned the win and evened his season record at 1-1 after limiting the Lumberjacks to two hits with three strikeouts in three innings. However, the Baytown native was only part of a strong pitching effort by the Cougars.

Freshman southpaw Donnie Joseph earned the start and set the tone for the entire game, holding the Lumberjacks to only three hits in the first four innings. After Laird's three innings of work, Wright and Tully worked the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to hand the Cougars their third shutout of the season

Meanwhile, the Cougar offense pounded out nine hits. Ryan Lormand batted 2-for-4 with a run, double and stolen base, while Jimmy Cesario went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI to extend his hitting streak to a career- and UH-season-best 10 games. Sophomore Felix Fanaselle batted 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to career-best eight straight games.

SFA reliever Erik Gregersen collected the loss and fell to 0-1 after allowing a run off two hits with a strikeout in one inning. He was one of nine Lumberjack pitchers to throw one inning in the game.

Zach Gardner went 2-for-4, while Chris Smith finished the day 2-for-2 in the losing effort.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 18-14 overall, while Stephen F. Austin fell to 18-17. The Cougars swept the regular-season series against the Lumberjacks after enjoying a 15-6 win in the 2007 season opener for both teams on Feb. 6 at Cougar Field.

The Cougars continue their Conference USA schedule this weekend as they play host to No. 5 Rice in a three-game series that features the Top Two leaders in the latest standings. That series begins with 7 p.m., games on both Friday and Saturday before wrapping up at 1 p.m., Sunday.

In addition to the Internet broadcast, Friday's game also will be televised nationally on CSTV, the first of four Cougar games on television during the 2007 regular season. Tom Hart will call the play-by-play action with former Major Leaguer Kevin Stocker providing the color analysis.

The Cougars struck for the game's first run in the third inning. Lormand led off with a double down the left-field line and scored easily when Cesario ripped an RBI-single through the right side for a 1-0 Cougar lead.

UH added another run in the fourth inning. After drawing a leadoff walk, Luis Flores moved to third following Felix Fanaselle's single to right field and scored when Bryan Pounds reached on a fielder's choice.

The Cougars pushed their lead to 3-0 one inning later. Cesario reached on an infield single and moved into scoring position following an errant throw to first base. Dustin Kingsbury then slapped an RBI-single through the right side to plate Cesario.

The Cougars added their final run of the day without the benefit of a hit in the eighth inning. Bryan Pounds and Zak Presley posted back-to-back, one-out walks. Pounds moved to third base after tagging on a deep fly ball to center field and then teamed with Presley on a double steal for a 4-0 UH lead.
