HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team dropped the final game of a three-game series to No. 12 TCU, 12-2, Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field.
The Cougars (13-17) fall to 51-43-2 all-time against the Horned Frogs.
TCU opened the game with a three-run home run in the second inning and never looked back. Houston was able to put a run on the board in the home half of the inning. M.P. Cokinos led off the inning with a double to center field. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Matt Murphy's groundout to first base.
The Horned Frogs posted one run in the third inning, a solo home run from Jason Coats and Aaron Shultz scored in the fourth after reaching base on a triple to right center. TCU extended its lead once again the in fifth with a single run and two more in the seventh pushed their lead to seven, 8-1.
Houston plated a second run in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Chris Wallace reached base after getting hit in the wrist by a pitch. Ryan Still put two runners on base with a walk and Joel Ansley's RBI pinch hit sent Wallace to the plate.
TCU followed that up with three runs in the eighth inning and a single run in the ninth to close out the series.
Michael Goodnight pitched the opening five innings, surrendering six runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Eric Brooks, Codey Morehouse and Barry Laird closed out the game, giving up a combined six runs with three strikeouts.
Houston will travel to San Antonio, Texas for a mid-week match-up at UTSA on April 13. The Cougars will then return to Cougar Field for a three-game Conference USA series against Memphis April 16-18.
