Houston Drops Opener at Tulane, 17-16

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Houston Baseball registered 14 hits and scored 16 runs, but it wasn't enough as Tulane rallied back to win Game 1 of the three-game American Athletic Conference series, 17-16, on Friday.

With the loss, the Cougars fell to 20-13 overall and 6-4 in league play, while the Green Wave improved to 15-20 and 5-5 in American action.

Freshman Drew Minter had a career night at the plate, tallying three hits and four RBI, featuring two doubles. Cooper Coldiron tied his career-high with four RBI on a pair of hits.

Joe Davis went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, while Tyler Bielamowicz scored five times, a career-best, on three walks and two hits. Grayson Padgett added an RBI and scored three runs on two walks.

Junior starter Trey Cumbie worked 6.0 innings, allowing five earned runs with four walks and eight strikeouts but would finish with the no decision.

Seeing action out of the bullpen was senior Joey Pulido, who tossed 1.0 inning, allowing five earned runs with one walk and one strikeout and sophomore Fred Villarreal, who worked 0.1 innings, surrendering a run on two walks.

Sophomore Carter Henry was dealt the unfortunate loss, falling to 3-1 on the year after allowing five unearned runs with a strikeout and four hits in 1.1 innings of work.

2nd | Houston jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to an RBI by Cooper Coldiron and an RBI-double by Drew Minter. Tyler Bielamowicz led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a throwing error and to third on a single by Grayson Padgett.

Coldiron plated Bielamowicz with a groundout to the right side and with two outs, Minter drove a ball into deep right center for a stand up double, scoring Padgett for the two-run lead.

Tulane would make it a ballgame when it plated two runs in the bottom half of the second to make it a 2-2 game following a single, walk and a two-run double to right field.

4th | Houston had its most offensive productive inning of the year, scoring 10 runs on five hits with five walks and one hit batter to break open 2-2 game to make it 12-2.

Drew Minter tallied three RBI in the inning on two hits and Joe Davis and Cooper Coldiron each had plated two RBI on a double and single, respectively.

15 Cougars came to the plate in the inning and six different Cougars scored a run.

Tulane scored one run on a fielding error by Houston to make it 12-3.

6th | Houston adds another run in the sixth after Tyler Bielamowicz is hit to lead off the inning, allowing him to come around to score on a two-out RBI-single by Tucker Redden.

Tulane would respond with a pair of runs in the latter half of the inning on three hits to make it a 13-5 game.

7th | The Cougars continued to add to their lead with their 14th run of the game on a Cooper Coldiron RBI-single, scoring Tyler Bielamowicz, who reached on a bunt single to load the bases prior to a Tulane double play.

Tulane plated three runs on two hits and a catcher's interference to trim Houston's lead to 14-8 in the seventh.

8th | Doubles from Tucker Redden and Lael Lockhart Jr. gave Houston another run and Connor Hollis scored on a passed ball to add two more runs to the score column, giving Houston a 16-8 lead.

Tulane went on to score four runs on three hits in the eighth to make it a 16-12 game.

9th | After Houston went down 1-2-3 in the top half of the ninth offensively, Tulane rallied back and scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to win it, 17-16.

Due to impending weather in the New Orleans area on Saturday, the two teams have agreed to move Saturday's game to Sunday where a doubleheader has been scheduled to begin at Noon.
