HOUSTON - Pitcher Brad Sullivan tied a school single-game record with 16 strikeouts to help lead the University of Houston baseball team to an 8-2 win over Saint Louis on Friday in the first game of a Conference USA series at Cougar Field.
The junior righthander scattered two runs off five hits in eight innings of work for his fifth win of the season. Sullivan struck out at least one batter in each inning that he worked and struck out the side four times.
He tied the school record that he originally set against Memphis on April 12, 2002. In addition, he boosted his season strikeout total to 104 and became the first pitcher in UH history to record back-to-back 100+-strikeout seasons. In 2002, the Nederland, Texas, native led the nation and set a UH single-season record with 157 strikeouts.
The series continues at 7 p.m., Saturday. UH junior southpaw Danny Zell (7-3, 2.25) is scheduled to start for the Cougars with Saint Louis slated to throw righthander Ben Hutton (0-6, 5.11).

The Cougar offense continued its recent stellar play by erupting for eight runs off 11 hits and gave Sullivan an early cushion with four runs in the second inning.
Michael Bourn went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs, while Hyung Cho batted 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Nick Bott batted 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs, while Sam Mitchell went 1-for-2 with a run and RBI.
SLU starter Jake Baumgartner dropped to 4-3 this season after allowing seven runs off 10 hits with two strikeouts in seven innings of work.
The Cougars struck for the game's first runs with a four-spot in the second inning. After UH loaded the bases, Bott scored Cole Bruce and Mitchell with a double down the left field line. Two batters later, Bourn laced a single through the right side of the infield to score Bott and Thanos Papavasiliou for a 4-0 Cougar lead.
Saint Louis struck for its first run in the fourth inning when Corey Lawson blasted a solo homer over the left field wall.
UH pushed its lead to 6-1 in the fifth inning when Cho laced a double down the right field line to plate Bourn, who led off with an infield single. After moving around to third on a groundout, Cho scored when Baumgartner's pickoff attempt to first base went awry.
In the sixth, Johnny Sweeney laced a single up the middle to plate Jake Friedrich for Saint Louis' final run of the night.
The Cougars added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the final margin of victory. Mitchell slapped an RBI-single to left field to score Cho for the first run, and Brett Logan's safety squeeze in the eighth scored Stuart Musslewhite from third base to cap the scoring.
Ryan Murphy went 2-for-4 to lead the Saint Louis offense.
