SUGAR LAND, Texas -- Down 5-0 through six innings, Houston Baseball rallied to plate four runs in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars fell 5-4 to Sam Houston State in Game 1 of the Don Sanders Cup on Tuesday at Constellation Field.

With the loss, the Cougars fell to 25-11 overall, while the Bearkats improved to 26-11 with the win. The two teams will meet twice more this season, next at Schroeder Park, next Tuesday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m.

The Cougars will return to Schroeder Park for the next four games, beginning with a pivotal American Athletic Conference series with league-leader Tulane. The series will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, continue at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and wrap at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Houston was led offensively by redshirt freshman Wendell Champion II with a 2-for-2 day, driving in a run on his first career triple. Corey Julks and Connor Hollis each had a two-hit day with an RBI and Jake Scheiner plated a run on a single.

Freshman starter Brayson Hurdsman, in just his second career start, didn't allow an earned run, but surrendered five hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.

Nolan Bond took over in the fifth inning, but would allow two run on five hits with one walk and one strikeout. After a leadoff base runner in the sixth, Aaron Fletcher took over and tossed 2.0 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and one walk.

Freshman Carter Henry entered the eighth and tossed 1.1 innings, allowing one hit with two walks.

Fellow freshman Tyler Bielamowicz came in and shut the door, retiring the two hitters he faced in the ninth.

1st | Sam Houston State took advantage of two Houston defensive miscues in the top of the first and scored a pair of runs for the early 2-0 lead.

3rd | The Bearkats add to their lead with a run in the third after a single, double and error.

5th | Sam Houston State extended its lead with a pair of runs in the fifth on four hits to make it 5-0.

7th | Houston made things interesting in the seventh, scoring X runs on XX hits. The inning began with a leadoff double by Fuentes, followed by an RBI-triple by pinch hitter Champion to plate the Cougars' first run. With two outs, Hollis reaches on a fielder's choice and Champion scores.

The two-out rally continued when Julks then tripled in Hollis and later scored on an RBI-single by Scheiner to make it a 5-4 game.

Sam Houston State improved to 26-11 overall with the win. Starter Hayden Wesneski earned the win, moving to 6-1 on the year after tossing 5.0 shutout frames. The Bearkats out hit the Cougars, 12-8, led by Lance Miles' two-hit, one RBI day.
