Houston Falls in Series Opener vs. Tulane

HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball was never able to overcome an early deficit, falling 7-1 to Tulane in Game 1 Friday of the three-game American Athletic Conference series at Schroeder Park.

With the loss, the Cougars fell to 25-12 overall and 6-4 in league play, while Tulane improved to 20-19 overall and 8-2 in American action.

The Cougars and Green Wave continue their three-game series at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and wrap at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Houston was led offensively by Corey Julks -- who belted his second home run of the year -- a two-out, solo shot in the bottom of the ninth. The Cougars were held to just four hits on the night, led by Julks' two-hit day. Connor Wong and Tyler Bielamowicz also had a hit.

Sophomore Mitch Ullom slid into the Friday start after projected starter Trey Cumbie was under the weather. Ullom allowed two runs on seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. He fell to 5-3 on the year with the loss.

Freshman Fred Villarreal took over in the sixth, tossing 2.2 innings. The righty allowed four runs on four hits with two walks. He handed the ball to sophomore Nolan Bond, who allowed a home run -- a three-run shot -- and struck out one in 1.0 inning of work.

1st | Tulane jumped out on top with a run in the top of the first on two hits and two walks.

5th | The Green Wave added to their lead with a run in the fifth following a double and an RBI-single.

7th | Tulane would continue to build on its lead by scoring its third run of the game in the seventh on a leadoff solo home run by Jake Willsey.

9th | Tulane continued to pad its lead as another solo home run by Willsey made it a 4-0 game and after two walks, the Green Wave used a three-run home run to break open the game at 7-0.

A two-out solo home run by Julks in the bottom of the ninth broke up the shutout.

Tulane improved to 20-19 overall and remained in first place as the league leader with an 8-2 mark. The Green Wave used six extra base hits, including three home runs to earn a win in Game 1 of the series. Tulane was led by Jake Willsey with two home runs and three hits, while Jarret DeHart belted a three-run home run.

Starter Corey Merrill tossed 8.0 shutout innings, allowing three hits with three walks to earn the win.
