Walkoff Win Evens Series with Tulane

HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball rallied from a 7-3 deficit in the fifth to earn an 8-7 walkoff win over league-leader Tulane on Saturday to even the American Athletic Conference weekend series at Schroeder Park.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 26-12 overall and 7-4 in league play, while Tulane fell to 20-20 on the season and 8-3 in American action with one game left to go in this weekend series.

The Cougars and Green Wave will wrap up the weekend series at 1 p.m. Sunday at Schroeder Pak.

Houston tallied nine hits, but it was the small ball that won the game. The Cougars were led offensively by Connor Hollis, who tallied three RBI on a two-RBI squeeze bunt and the game-winner on an RBI-double in the ninth.

Freshman Wendell Champion II went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while freshman Tyler Bielamowicz recorded two RBI on a triple and finished the day with two hits.

Pitching Breakdown:
Trey Cumbie | 4.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 7 K
Aaron Fletcher | 4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

Sophomore Trey Cumbie struck out seven, but allowed six runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Sophomore Aaron Fletcher relieved Cumbie in the fifth inning and finished the game, tossing 4.1 innings in relief -- allowing just one unearned run on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts to earn the win, improving to 1-0 on the year. Fletcher retired the final seven hitters he faced.

3rd | The Cougars scored three runs on two bunt singles and a two-RBI sacrifice bunt by Hollis.

4th | Tulane responded with a run in the top of the fourth following a solo home run.

5th | The Green Wave used a six-run fifth inning to go ahead 7-3, highlighted by a three-run home run by Grant Witherspoon.

7th | It took until the seventh inning, but the Cougars would plate three runs on four hits to narrow Tulane's lead to 7-6. The inning began with a leadoff single by Triolo. Padgett would single, moving Triolo to third with one out. Bielamowicz came up big, driving in a pair of runs on a clutch, two-run triple right before Champion doubles in Bielamowicz for the three-run frame.

8th | Continuing to chip away at Tulane's lead, Houston tied the game in the eighth when Scheiner reached on a fielding error, moved up a base on a bunt and error by Triolo. With runners at first and second, Jordan Monacy sacrificed the two over and Padgett's RBI-sacrifice bunt plated Scheiner for the game-tying run.

9th | All knotted at 7-7 entering the bottom of the ninth, Champion reaches on a fielding error and is sacrificed to second base by Wong. With one out, Hollis finds the right field line and walks off for an RBI-double as the game winner.

Tulane fell to 20-20 on the year with the loss and 8-3 in league play. The Green Wave fell down 3-0 early, but rallied to take a 7-3 lead following a six-run fifth inning. Tulane was led offensively by Grant Witherspoon, who belted a three-run home run. Reliever Christian Colletti suffered the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year after allowing the game-winning run on one hit in 1.0 inning of work.
