Houston Uses Run-Rule to Win Series

HOUSTON -- Highlighted by Connor Wong's three home runs and Corey Julks' 4-for-4 day, Houston Baseball earned a 12-2 run-rule victory in seven innings over Tulane on Sunday to win the American Athletic Conference weekend series at Schroeder Park.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 27-12 overall and 8-4 in league play, while Tulane fell to 20-21 overall and 8-4 in league action. The two teams now sit atop the league standings with four conference weekends to play.

The Cougars will remain at home for their final midweek game of 2017 this coming Tuesday, April 25 when they welcome Sam Houston State to town for Game 2 of the Sanders Cup. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.

  • Connor Wong belted three home runs (now has eight total) on Sunday -- became the second Cougar this season to accomplish that feat as Jake Scheiner belted three on March 19 vs. Alabama State.

Connor Wong belted three home runs and drove in five RBI, while Corey Julks went 4-for-4 with a run and RBI in the run-rule victory over Tulane on Sunday.

Tyler Bielamowicz continued his hot-hitting, going 1-for-1 with a run and two RBI, while walking three times. Grayson Padgett added two hits and an RBI and Jordan Monacy plated a run on a base hit.

The Cougars tallied nine walks on the day and scored a season-best nine runs in one inning -- the first -- for a quick 9-0 lead.

Senior John King went 6.0 solid innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits and one walk, while fanning five. With that performance, he earned the win and improved to 5-1 on the year.

Junior Joey Pulido tossed the final inning in relief and struck out two.

1st | Houston jumped out to its best start of 2017 with a nine-run first inning on seven hits. The inning was highlighted by Wong, who belted two home runs in the frame to drive in four RBI. Three straight walks loaded the bases after Wong belted his first and with one out, Padgett singled in Hollis and Bielamowicz plated a pair on a single. Up 4-0, Monacy drove in a run on a single into left center before Wong crushed his second home run of the frame and seventh of the season -- a three-run shot -- to put the Cougars ahead 9-0.

4th | Tulane scratched across its first run in the fourth after a bang-bang play at first resulted in a safe call followed by an RBI-single.

5th | Wong continued to shine at the plate, belting his third home run of the day -- a solo shot to open the fifth inning -- putting the Cougars ahead by nine at 10-1.

6th | Tulane uses a leadoff home run in the sixth to score its second run.

7th | Houston needed two runs in the seventh to end the game in run-rule fashion and it did just that. Wong opened the inning with a triple off the right center wall -- inches short of his fourth home run -- He then scored on an RBI-single by Julks. After Tulane loaded the bases with an intentional walk to Jake Scheiner, Hollis scored on a wild pitch after being hit for the Cougars' final run.

Tulane fell to 20-21 on the year and lost its first American series of the season, dropping to 8-4 in league action. The Green Wave tallied six hits on Sunday, led by Hunter Williams' solo home run. Starter Ross Massey suffered the loss, allowing four runs on one hit and three walks in 0.0 innings. He fell to 0-6 on the year.
