HOUSTON - University of Houston pitcher Austin Sumerlin held Cincinnati to only one hit with five strikeouts through five shutout innings to help lead the Cougar Baseball team to a 6-3 win over the Bearcats in the finale of a Conference USA series Sunday at Cougar Field.
Making only his second start of the season, Sumerlin posted new personal single-game highs in both strikeouts and innings pitched to improve to 2-0. Working on a pitch count, the Houston native faced only three batters over the minimum and extended his consecutive scoreless inning streak to 15.0 innings, the longest streak by any Cougar pitcher this season.
After Cincinnati pulled to within a run in the sixth inning, the Cougars answered in the next half inning with two runs for a more comfortable cushion. From there, reliever Rickey Putman limited the Bearkats to only one hit with a career-best four strikeouts in 2.2 innings, and Brandon Roznovsky pitched a perfect ninth inning for his team-leading sixth save of the season.
Thanos Papavasiliou went 3-for-4 with a double, run and two RBIs to lead the Cougar offense, which rapped out 11 hits in the win. Matt Farrington batted 3-for-4 with a run, and Travis Tully went 2-for-4 with a run to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Tully became just the 11th player in school history to have two hitting streak of 10 games or more in the same season.
Stuart Musslewhite went 0-for-4 to see his UH season- and career-best 14-game hitting streak snapped.
Cincinnati starter Eric Eckman dropped to 0-5 after giving up two runs off two hits in 1.1 innings.
No UC player recorded more than one hit in the game, with Steve Pickerell's two RBIs leading the team.

The Cougars grabbed the early lead in their first at-bat. After drawing a leadoff walk, Tully stole second and scored on Papavasilou's RBI-single through the right side of the UC infield.
UH pushed its lead to 2-0 in the second. Brett Logan drew a leadoff walk and raced all the way to third on a hit-and-run with Farrington, who laced a single up the middle. Patrick Gaylord then grounded out but not before Logan gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
I the third inning, the Cougars doubled their lead with a big blast from Kevin Roberts. After a leadoff single from Papavasiliou, Kevin Roberts blasted an 0-2 offering over the left field wall to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead.
Cincinnati pulled to within a run in the sixth inning with three runs. Pickerell gave the Bearcats their first runs of the game with a two-RBI double to left center scored on Elliot Salcedo's infield groundout to make the score 4-3.
However, the Cougars answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. After back-to-back singles by Farrington and Logan to start the inning, Gaylord's infield bunt single plated Farrington. After a hit by Tully loaded the bases, Papavasiliou drew a walk for a 6-3 Cougar lead.
