HOUSTON -- Jake Scheiner and Landon Etzel each homered, but it wasn't enough as Houston Baseball fell 12-2 to Sam Houston State Tuesday at Schroeder Park.

The Cougars fell to 27-13 overall, while the Bearkats improved to 27-14. With the win, Sam Houston State won the Don Sanders Cup after earning a 5-4 victory over Houston last week in Sugar Land.

The Cougars will hit the road this weekend to face USF in a three-game American Athletic Conference series in Tampa, Fla. The series begins at 5:30 pm CT, continues at 5:30 pm CT Saturday and wraps at 12 pm CT Sunday.

Houston was held to just three hits, two of which were home runs. Junior Jake Scheiner belted his 13th long ball of the season, while freshman Landon Etzel cranked out his first career home run.

Houston pitching struck out 10 Sam Houston State hitters, but would suffer the loss after allowing 11 earned runs on 14 hits. Freshman Brayson Hurdsman allowed three runs on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts, but fell to 2-2 on the year.

Freshman Fred Villarreal tossed 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with one walk in four strikeouts. He was relieved by sophomore Nolan Bond, who allowed three runs on four hits in 0.2 innings and freshman David Kanada, who allowed three runs on three hits in 0.1 innings.

Freshman Carter Henry was solid out of the bullpen, surrendering just one hit in 2.0 shutout innings with four strikeouts.

2nd | Sam Houston State uses three free passes and two base hits to go ahead 3-0 in the second inning on Houston.

4th | The Bearkats added to their lead in the fourth with a pair of runs following a single, walk, passed ball and RBI-squeeze bunt to make it 5-0.

6th | Sam Houston State went ahead 6-0 with a one-out double, single and RBI-groundout.
The Cougars registered their first hit of the game on a home run by Scheiner in the latter half of the sixth to make it a 6-1 game in favor of Sam Houston State.

7th | Sam Houston used its second three-run inning to go ahead 9-1 in the seventh after four hits.

8th | Continuing to add to its lead, the Bearkats responded with its third three-run frame of the game after two triples and a three-run home run for the 12-1 advantage.

9th | Etzel belted his first career home run in the bottom of the ninth, a solo shot to left field, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars fell 12-2.

Sam Houston State used four pitchers, who combined to strike out 10 and hold Houston to three hits. Reliever Mark Hammel earned the win, tossing 1.0 shutout inning out of the bullpen. The Bearkats tallied 14 hits, led by Taylor Beene, who went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI, while Bryce Johnson added three hits and two RBI.
