South Florida Rallies to Take Win over Baseball
April 26, 2003
TAMPA, Fla. - Bryan Hierlmeier and Jeff Baisley each laced two-RBI singles in the seventh inning to help South Florida rally from a two-run deficit and take a 10-7 win over the University of Houston baseball team on Saturday night in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Red McEwen Field.
Earlier in the day, the Cougars took a 5-3 win in 10 innings when Stuart Musslewhite blasted a two-run homer to left center.
South Florida, which had trailed 4-1 and 7-3 in the game, erupted for four runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-7 lead and held on the rest of the way. The Bulls took advantage of three hits and two walks - all with two outs in the inning - to split the twinbill with the Cougars.
UH reliever Ryan Wagner, who was the winning pitcher in the first game Saturday, collected the loss and dropped to 2-5 after giving up two runs off two hits with a strikeout in 0.1 innings. USF reliever Chris Delaney improved to 2-1 after allowing only one hit with three strikeouts in two shutout innings.
USF reliever Joey Livingston earned his 11th save of the year after retiring the Cougar side in the ninth.
Thanos Papavasiliou, Cole Bruce and Stuart Musslewhite each rapped out three hits, with Bruce adding a double, home run, run and two RBIs in the losing effort. Michael Bourn and Travis Tully also batted 2-for-5 with a run.
The series wraps up at noon (CDT) Sunday. UH junior southpaw Brian Henderson (4-2, 1.45) is slated to start the series finale with USF righthander Travis Rios (5-1, 3.50) scheduled to take the hill for the Bulls in a showdown featuring the two current C-USA Co-Pitchers of the Week.

In the second inning, Papavasiliou and Bruce laced back-to-back doubles to lead off and hand the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.
One inning later, the Cougars pushed their lead to 2-0. Nick Bott led off with a single up the middle and moved all the way to third base on Bourn's single up the middle. From there, Tully brought Bott home with an infield groundout.
The Bulls cut that deficit in half in the bottom of the third, thanks to a walk and three straight hits with Myron Leslie's RBI-single to center field capping the rally.
However, UH regained its two-run advantage in the fourth inning when Bruce led off with a monster homer well over the center field wall.
In the fifth, the Cougars struck again with a two-out rally for another run. Papavasiliou reached on an infield single that bounced over the glove of USF first baseman Ronnie Handley and moved to second on Bruce's third hit of the game. From there, back-to-back passed balls by USF catcher Devin Ivany allowed Papavasiliou to score and give the Cougars a 4-1 lead.
However, the Bulls stampeded back to knot the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the frame. Leslie slapped an RBI-single for the first run, Travis Brown's groundout scored Leslie and Kris Howell blasted an RBI-double to score Devin Ivany.
In the sixth inning, UH grabbed the lead again with three more runs. After reaching on a one-out double to right center, Musslewhite scored the frame's first run on Michael Bourn's RBI-single single. Bourn then stole second base and came around on Travis Tully's RBI-single. Tully advanced to second on a USF infield error and gave the Cougars a 7-3 lead on Hyung Cho's RBI-single up the middle.
USF added another unearned run in the eighth inning on a Cougar infield error for the final margin of victory.
