FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU starter Lance Broadway threw a complete game with 12 strikeouts to help lead the 28th-ranked Horned Frogs to a 7-2 win over the University of Houston baseball team Friday in the opener of a Conference USA series.
Broadway scattered seven hits in the win and allowed only two runs (one earned) to improve to 10-1 in 2005. With the win, the Horned Frogs won their third straight game and fourth in their last five outings against the Cougars.
After falling behind 1-0, TCU scored two in the bottom of the second and never trailed again. When the Cougars tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth, the Horned Frogs struck for another run in the bottom of the frame, the first of four consecutive innings in which TCU scored at least one run.
UH starter Matt Farrington collected the loss and dropped to 6-4 after giving up six runs off eight hits with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
Junior outfielder Travis Tully went 3-for-4 with a run, while sophomore infielder Brad Lincoln batted 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore shortstop Dustin Kingsbury went 0-for-5 to see his career-best 13-game hitting streak come to an end.
TCU shortstop Stuart Musslewhite batted 2-for-5 with a double, run and RBI, while center fielder Keith Conlon went 2-for-4 with a run and two-run triple to lead the Horned Frogs, who outhit the Cougars 10-7.
The series continues at 2 p.m., Saturday before wrapping up at 1 p.m., Sunday. Both games can be heard live on KGBC 1540 AM. All three games also can be heard on the Internet at www.UHCougars.com with former UH letterwinners Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action.
The Cougars struck for the game's first run in their first at bat. After leading off with a single to right field, Tully moved to second base following Kori Williams' sacrifice bunt and to third after a groundout. Lincoln then gave UH a 1-0 lead with a single through the right side.
TCU grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Kyle Dahlberg's bases-loaded double to right center scored a pair of Horned Frog runners.
In the fifth inning, the Cougars knotted the game at 2-2, courtesy of two walks and a pair of TCU errors. Brett Logan and Tully each drew one-out walks, and Williams reached on the first error to load the bases. After a strikeout, Lincoln's grounder was misplayed in the TCU infield, allowing Logan to score the tying run.
However, the Horned Frogs answered in the next half-inning with a run of their own, courtesy of a groundout which allowed Musslewhite to score from third base.
TCU doubled its lead in the sixth inning when Bo Cogbill's RBI-single into left field plated Matt McGuirk. One inning later, Conlon's triple down the right field line score two runs. The Horned Frogs added their final runs in the eighth inning when Musslewhite's double down the right field line scored Cogbill.
