Baseball Upset at Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday
May 2, 2006
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Buck Britton's double in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a tie and lifted Stephen F. Austin to a 3-2 win over the 10th-ranked University of Houston baseball team Tuesday in a non-conference game at Jaycees Field.
With the score tied at 2-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Zach Gardner led off with a single to center field and stole second base to move into scoring position. Britton then laced an RBI-double down the right-field line for a 3-2 SFA lead.
That would be all the run support that SFA reliever Jared Schrom would need. The freshman righthander limited the Cougars to only one hit with a strikeout over five shutout innings to improve to 1-2 this season.
SFA catcher Steven Hill went 2-for-4 with a double and game-high two RBIs to pace the Lumberjack offense which outhit the Cougars 7-6. Outfielder David Jeans went 2-for-4 with a run in the winning effort.
With the loss, the Cougars dropped to 31-17 overall and saw their 18-game winning streak against the Lumberjacks snapped. Stephen F. Austin improved to 9-39 overall.
UH reliever Shea Hancock collected the loss and fell to 2-2 after giving up one run off two hits with a strikeout in 0.2 innings of work.
The Cougars return to action this weekend as they play host to Conference USA rival UCF in a three-game series at Cougar Field. That series begins with 7 p.m. games on both Friday and Saturday before wrapping up at 1 p.m., Sunday.
All three games can be heard live over the Internet at www.UHCougars.com with former UH letterwinners Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling all the action. Fans also can follow play-by-play action by clicking on the "Live Stats" link on the schedule at www.UHCougars.com.
The Cougars grabbed the lead with the first run in the second inning. Josh Stirneman started the rally with a one-out single to left field and stole second base to move into scoring position. Two batters later, Travis Cougot laced a single through the left side of the SFA infield to score Stirneman and hand the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, the Lumberjacks grabbed the lead on Hill's two-run single up the middle.
UH tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning when Luis Flores blasted a first-pitch offering down the left-field line.
