HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Despite a strong pitching performance by freshman Carter Henry, Houston Baseball would see its 2-0 lead disappear, falling at Sam Houston State, 3-2, on Tuesday in midweek action in the series finale of the Don Sanders Cup.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 28-16 overall, while Sam Houston State improved to 30-15 with the win.
Houston returns home this weekend to host UConn in a pivotal American Athletic Conference series, beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. The series will continue at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and wrap at 1 p.m. Sunday at Schroeder Park.
Freshman Carter Henry made just his third career start in his young career and showed well, allowing a two-out, two-run home run and surrendered only six hits with no walks in a career-long 5.2 innings. He struck out a career-high seven, surpassing his previous high in strikeouts of five, which came back on March 22 vs. Texas Southern.
Junior Seth Romero took over in the sixth and induced an inning-ending strikeout. He returned in the seventh, but Sam Houston State would garner three of its four hits in the frame off the southpaw to take a 3-2 lead. Romero suffered the loss, falling to 3-4 on the season, allowing one run on four hits in 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.
1st | Houston jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a leadoff single by Wong, an SHSU miscue and an RBI-single by Lockhart with two outs in the frame.
2nd | The Cougars added to their lead with another run in the second thanks to a two-out RBI-single by Wong, scoring Hollis, who reached on a two-out single and took second on a wild pitch.
6th | With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Sam Houston State tied the game with a two-run home run to make it 2-2.
7th | Sam Houston State broke up the 2-2 stalemate with a single run in the seventh inning on three hits.
SAM HOUSTON STATE NOTES
Sam Houston State improved to 30-16 on the year with the Don Sanders Cup sweep of Houston. The Bearkats tallied 10 hits, led by Blake Chisolm's 3-for-4 night with two RBI and a run on a two-run home run that tied the game. SHSU reliever Dakota Mills earned the win, improving to 5-3 on the season after tossing 1.0 shutout frame. Dominic Robinson earned the save, his second, tossing 2.0 shutout innings, allowing just one hit.
