HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team scored nine runs in the seventh inning to break open a 3-2 game over the McNeese State Cowboys on their way to a 12-2 win in their final mid-week contest at Cougar Field.
The win moves the Cougars to 23-25 on the season and they finish 2-0 against McNeese State this season.
Houston trailed early in the contest after giving up two runs to the Cowboys in their opening at bat but the Cougars slowly chipped away at the deficit, scoring solo runs in the third and fourth before regaining the lead in the sixth.
UH got on the board first in the third when Taylor White scored on a Blake Kelso sacrifice to right field after reaching base on a triple, his second of the season. The Cougars then tied up the ball game in the fourth when Chris Wallace scored on a single to second base from Matt Murphy. Wallace reached base when he was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Cowboy's pitcher Jonathan Conrad. They then regained the lead with a solo run in the Wallace scored on Jake Runte ground out to the pitcher.
The game broke open in the seventh when Houston scored nine runs in the seventh to come away with the win. The nine runs where the most scored by the Cougars in a single inning this season. Kankel led off singling up the middle, while Chase Dempsay was hit by a pitch and Caleb Ramsey walked to load the bases. Wallace was hit by a pitch for a record tying third time in the seventh to score the Cougars first run of the inning and Presley walked in Dempsay to increase the lead, 5-2. Matt Murphy's single to right field brought in two more Cougar runs and he and Presley advanced another base on a throwing error by the right fielder. The Cowboys notched their first out when Runte grounded out the second baseman but White singled over second base to score Presley and Murphy.
Houston's ninth at bat of the inning came when Kelso singled to right field, advancing White to third and he would go on to score on a wild pitch. The Cougars got their final run of the night when Kelso scored on a Ramsey single.
The game closes out the Cougars mid-week slate for the 2009 season. They have two remaining Conference USA series remaining against East Carolina and UCF before the Conference USA Championship on March 20-25.
Houston will close out their home slate with a three-game series against East Carolina this weekend. Friday and Saturday's game are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start with the Sunday finale slated to begin at 1 p.m.
