Houston Clinches Series With Win No. 30

HOUSTON --Houston Baseball used a six-run second inning and a complete-game pitching effort by Trey Cumbie to earn a 9-1 win over UConn and clinch the American Athletic Conference weekend series at Schroeder Park Saturday.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 30-16 overall and 11-6 in league action, while UConn fell to 24-20 and 9-8 in American play. Houston also clinched win No. 30 for the fifth straight season.

Houston and UConn will wrap up its three-game series with the finale at 1 p.m. Sunday. Gates open at 11 a.m.

Houston Baseball out hit UConn 9-6, led by Connor Hollis, who went 3-for-4 with two runs. Grayson Padgett, Connor Wong, Jake Scheiner, Jared Triolo, John Grimsley each tallied an RBI in the win.

Pitching Breakdown:
Trey Cumbie | 9.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K

Houston starter Trey Cumbie went the distance for the second time this season, tossing a 9.0-inning complete game gem, allowing just one run on six hits with two walks to accompany his six strikeouts.

With the win, Cumbie moved to 7-1 on the year.

2nd | Houston used a six-run second inning to take a 6-0 lead. The inning began with a Julks walk and two stolen bases before a UConn throwing error plated Julks for the game's first run. With one out in the inning, Lockhart walked before three straight singles by Hollis, Grimsley and Wong made it 3-0 with RBI from Grimsley and Wong. Padgett came up big, scoring Grimsley on an RBI-sac bunt. Davis then worked a walk, stole second and allowed Scheiner to plate a pair on a two-run single through the left side to make it a six-run advantage.

4th | UConn uses three hits in the fourth inning to plate a run to make it a 6-1 game in favor of the Cougars.

7th | Houston added to its lead in the seventh with a run to make it 8-1 when Scheiner scores on an RBI-sacrifice bunt by Triolo after reaching via the walk and stealing second base.

8th | The Cougars scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning thanks to a Hollis single, Grimsley walk and an RBI by Padgett, who reached via the error. With the pair, Houston extended its lead to 9-1.

UConn fell to 24-20 overall and 9-8 in American play with the series loss. The Huskies tallied just six hits, led by Tyler Gnesda's one-hit, one RBI night. Starter Mason Feole suffered the loss, falling to 6-2 on the season after allowing five earned runs on six hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.
