Baseball Drops Game to Against No. 22 East Carolina, 12-2
May 9, 2009
HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team gave up six runs, including three home runs in the sixth inning to No. 22 East Carolina falling 12-2 in the second game of the series at Cougar Field. With the loss, the series is tied 1-1 with the finale to be played on Sunday. After giving up a run to the Pirates in their first at bat, Houston tied up the ball game in the home half of the second inning after Chase Dempsay led off the inning with his 14th double of the year to right field, while scoring on a Chris Wallace sacrifice fly to right field. That would be as close as the Cougars would get in the ball game as the Pirates scored three runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead. They only increased their lead putting together six runs in the sixth inning, including three home runs. East Carolina then posted two final runs in the eighth before Houston scored a run in the bottom of the inning when Caleb Ramsey plated Kelso who led off with a double to right field. His double gave him 14 on the season to tie with Dempsay for the team lead. In addition, William Kankel finished with two outfield assists against the Pirates to move into an eight-way tie for sixth place in the single season record books with seven outfield assists. LOOKING AHEAD UH then closes out the regular season at UCF on May 14-16 before the Conference USA Championship in Hattiesburg, Miss., on May 20-25.
