MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis scored four runs in the middle three innings to break open a close game and take a 9-6 win over the University of Houston baseball team on Sunday in the finale of a Conference USA series at Nat Buring Stadium.
With the win, the Tigers won their first-ever series against the Cougars in C-USA play since 1997.
Gabe Lucas led the Cougar offense, going 3-for-4 with a run, two RBIs and two doubles. Cole Bruce blasted his fourth homer of the season and added two RBIs, while Matt Farrington batted 2-for-5 with a run.
Kurt Welch batted 4-got-5 with a run and three RBIs to lead Memphis, which outhit the Cougars 14-9. Chad House went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Brent Dlugach and Kyle Scott added two hits apiece.
Memphis starter Stephen Gostowski collected the win after allowing only four runs off six hits with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings and improved to 4-4. Reliever Bill Edwards earned his second save of the season after holding UH to two runs off three hits in 2.1 innings.
UH starter Brian Henderson dropped to 4-3 and saw his career-best four-game winning streak come to an end after giving up four runs off six hits with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.
Memphis jumped out to a 3-1 lead after three innings but the Cougars cut that deficit to one run at 3-2 in the fourth inning on Gabe Lucas' two-out RBI-double to right center.
However, the Tigers pushed their lead back to two run in the bottom of the frame on a wild pitch and took a 6-2 lead one inning later on Kyle Scott's RBI-single and a groundout from Kyle Sledd, which allowed Dlugach to score.
In the sixth inning, Welch's RBI single plated Chad House for a 7-2 Memphis lead.
The Cougars cut into that lead with three runs in the seventh inning on Hyung Cho's RBI-single and a two-run homer from Cole Bruce, his second of the series. UH then pulled to within 7-6 in the eighth when Lucas scored all the way from second base on a Memphis infield error.
But again the Tigers answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame on Bill Moss' RBI-single and Welch's RBI-double.
The Cougars return to action at 7 p.m., Tuesday, when they meet ninth-ranked Texas A&M at College Station, Texas.
