STORRS, Conn. -- Houston Baseball went back-and-forth all day with No. 18 UConn until the Huskies were able to break free and score two runs in the eighth to secure a 6-4 win over the Cougars in the American Athletic Conference series finale.
With the loss, Houston fell to 31-20 on the year and 16-8 in American play. Because of the doubleheader sweep of UConn on Friday, the Cougars claimed at least a share of the title with one conference weekend left to play.
- Jared Triolo singled in the first inning to extend his on-base streak to 17 games.
- Grayson Padgett belted his third home run of the year -- a solo shot to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh.
- The Cougars hit five home runs in the three-game series at UConn.
Houston tallied eight hits, led by Grayson Padgett, who homered for the third time this season. He tallied two hits and scored twice, while Jared Triolo added another multi-hit game to his strong sophomore campaign with two hits, two runs and an RBI.
Sophomore Brayson Hurdsman made his fifth start of 2018 and his second straight Sunday start as he went 4.0 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.
Fellow classmate Carter Henry took over and tossed 2.0 innings, surrendering one run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Joey Pulido tossed 2.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He suffered the unfortunate loss, falling to 4-2 on the year in relief.
2nd | UConn went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second following an infield error and a pair of hits.
4th | The Huskies broke open the 1-1 score with their second unearned run of the day, going ahead 2-1 on an RBI-single after an error.
5th | Grayson Padgett led off the fifth with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Jared Triolo RBI-single into center to tie the game back at 2-2. The inning continued when Tyler Bielamowicz singled and both Triolo and Bielamowicz moved up a base on a wild pitch, allowing Lael Lockhart Jr. to plate Triolo for the 3-2 lead.
UConn, again, tied the game back up at 3-3 in the latter half of the fifth on sac fly after the lead off hitter reached via a double.
6th | UConn used a pair of hits, including a two-out RBI-single into right center to regain the lead at 4-3.
7th | Grayson Padgett led off the seventh inning with a solo home run to deep right field for his third long ball of the year. That home run tied the game at 4-4.
8th | With two outs in the eighth, UConn reaches on a very close play at first with an infield single and the runner at second came around to score on a very close play at the plate for the 5-4 lead. The Huskies then doubled to go ahead by two runs at 6-4.
Houston will return to Texas to take on Rice in the Silver Glove Series finale at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Constellation Field in Sugar Land. The Cougars will then travel to Hammond, La. to face Southland Conference foe Southeastern Louisiana in a two-game, out-of-conference series, Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. each day.
