Wiley Pitches Cougar Baseball To 6-1 Win Over Southern Miss
May 15, 2011
HOUSTON - Junior pitcher Mo Wiley pitched the first complete game of his career, guiding the University of Houston baseball team to a 6-1 series finale victory over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field. With the win, the Cougars take a 2-1 series victory and improve to 24-27 overall and 11-10 in Conference USA play.
Wiley allowed just one run on eight hits with two strikeouts to improve to 3-4 on the mound this season.
"I'm really proud of how the ball club responded to the loss Friday night and to the conversation I had with them after the game," head coach Todd Whitting. "I couldn't have asked for better effort or better play. I told them as long as their expectation level is as high as mine for this program then we'll win."
"Southern Miss is a very, very good team. We played very well against them in the last two games. Friday night was the silver lining and maybe we needed to lose another tough game because we really responded well. The one thing we really haven't done a whole lot of this year is lose a tough game and come back and win back-to-back games. I'm really proud with how we played."
Houston carried the momentum from Saturday night's win into to the finale. After loading the bases, Southern Miss recorded two quick outs but that wouldn't stop the Cougars as they went on to score five runs in the first inning. Ansley led the two-out rally with a single up the middle to give UH a 2-0 advantage. Junior John Cannon loaded the bases again with a single to left field, before junior Codey Morehouse's single rolled through the third baseman's legs, sending two runners to the plate. Senior Ty Stuckey capped the inning with an RBI single to put UH up 5-0.
Houston's offense chased Southern Miss starter Jonathan Thompson after just 0.2 innings. He gave up five runs, two earned, on five hits with one strikeout for his first loss of the season.
Still added to the Cougars lead in the fourth inning scoring on sophomore Chase Jensen's RBI single to right field.
Adam Doleac gave Southern Miss it lone run of the afternoon with a home run to right field in the sixth inning.
