HOUSTON - Marc Maddox went 4-for-6 with two home runs, three runs and four RBIs to lead 17th-ranked Southern Mississippi to a 15-3 win over the University of Houston baseball team Saturday in the finale of a Conference USA series at Cougar Field.
Maddox was part of a USM offensive attack, which rapped out 16 hits, including three home runs in the fourth inning alone.
After jumping out to a 5-2 lead after the first three innings, the Golden Eagles took control of the game in the fourth with three runs. Maddox and Cook connected on back-to-back home runs, and two batters later, Clint King connected on a two-run shot to give USM a comfortable 9-2 lead.
USM starter Stephen Castleman improved to 7-2 after holding the Cougars to three runs off six hits with two strikeouts in six innings of work. UH starter Brian Henderson saw his record even at 4-4 after giving up five runs off seven hits with three strikeouts in only 2.1 innings.
Gabe Lucas batted 3-for-4 and was the only Cougar batter with more than two hits in the contest.
Cook went 4-for-5 with three runs, a home run and three RBIs, while Brad Willcutt hit 3-for-6 with a run, double and two RBIs. Matt Shepherd and King each rapped out two hits apiece.
With the loss, the Cougars closed out the regular season with a 31-25 overall record, 18-12 in C-USA action. The Cougars return to action at 9 a.m., Wednesday in a first-round matchup against East Carolina at the 2003 C-USA Tournament at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans. Earlier this season, the Pirates won two of three from the Cougars in the C-USA series opener in Houston.
