HOUSTON - Marc Maddox went 4-for-6 with two home runs, three runs and four RBIs to lead 17th-ranked Southern Mississippi to a 15-3 win over the University of Houston baseball team Saturday in the finale of a Conference USA series at Cougar Field.

Maddox was part of a USM offensive attack, which rapped out 16 hits, including three home runs in the fourth inning alone.

After jumping out to a 5-2 lead after the first three innings, the Golden Eagles took control of the game in the fourth with three runs. Maddox and Cook connected on back-to-back home runs, and two batters later, Clint King connected on a two-run shot to give USM a comfortable 9-2 lead.

The Cougars answered in the bottom of the frame on Nick Bott's pinch-hit RBI single to center field that scored Matt Farrington, but that would be as close as the team would get the rest of the way.

USM starter Stephen Castleman improved to 7-2 after holding the Cougars to three runs off six hits with two strikeouts in six innings of work. UH starter Brian Henderson saw his record even at 4-4 after giving up five runs off seven hits with three strikeouts in only 2.1 innings.

Gabe Lucas batted 3-for-4 and was the only Cougar batter with more than two hits in the contest.

Cook went 4-for-5 with three runs, a home run and three RBIs, while Brad Willcutt hit 3-for-6 with a run, double and two RBIs. Matt Shepherd and King each rapped out two hits apiece.

With the loss, the Cougars closed out the regular season with a 31-25 overall record, 18-12 in C-USA action. The Cougars return to action at 9 a.m., Wednesday in a first-round matchup against East Carolina at the 2003 C-USA Tournament at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans. Earlier this season, the Pirates won two of three from the Cougars in the C-USA series opener in Houston.
