Baseball Falls to No. 30 Southern Miss in Series Opener

HOUSTON - No. 30 Southern Miss jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings and never looked back in taking a 10-5 win over the University of Houston baseball team Thursday in the opener of a Conference USA series at Cougar Field.
The Cougars (26-27, 15-12 C-USA) trimmed that lead to 6-5 after five innings, but the Golden Eagles broke the game open in their next at bat with four runs, thanks to four straight hits at one point.
UH starter Matt Farrington dropped to 7-5 after giving up six runs (five earned) off six hits and three walks in 4.1 innings. USM reliever Tyler Perrett collected the win and improved to 5-0 after allowing two runs off five hits with two strikeouts in five innings of work.
Sophomore shortstop Dustin Kingsbury went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while freshman infielder Bryan Pounds batted 2-for-4 in the losing effort. Junior infielder Kevin Roberts and junior DH Brian Temko tied for the team lead with two RBIs apiece.
USM catcher Kevin Coker went 3-for-5 with two runs, a homer and four RBIs to lead the Golden Eagles, which outhit the Cougars 12-10. Third baseman Marc Maddox batted 2-for-5 with a run and RBI, while outfielder Drew Carson finished the night 3-for-4 with a run, RBI and two doubles.
The Cougars continue the series when the meet Southern Miss at 7 p.m., Friday. That game can be heard live on KLVL 1480 AM while Saturday's game will be broadcast on KGBC 1540 AM. The Golden Eagles (38-16, 19-9 C-USA) struck for the game's first run in their first at bat. After reaching on a Cougar infield error to lead off the game, Trey Sutton came around to score on Marc Maddox's RBI-single into left field.
One inning later, Drew Carson's double off the base of the center-field wall plated Jody Blount. Two batters later, Trey Sutton laced an RBI-single into right field, and Kevin Coker followed with a three-run homer to give USM a 6-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Cougars took advantage of the long ball to cut the deficit in half. Kevin Roberts blasted a solo shot over the left-field wall for the Cougars' first mark on the scoreboard. After a one-out walk to Brad Lincoln, Brian Temko launched a two-run homer to left field for a 6-3 USM lead.
The Cougars cut the deficit to only one run in the fifth inning, thanks to two runs off a pair of hits. Chris Joseph led off with a walk and moved all the way to third base following Travis Tully's double down the left-field line. Two batters later, Kevin Roberts lifted a sacrifice fly into right field to score Joseph, and Roberts followed with an RBI-single through the right side to plate Tully.
USM pushed its lead back to five runs in the sixth inning, thanks to RBI-singles from Coker and Willcutt and a two-run double from Jason Lowery. That would cap the scoring for both teams for the rest of the night.
