HOUSTON - For the second consecutive night, the University of Houston baseball team broke a tie midway through the game and then held on the way to take a 3-2 win against 11th-ranked Tulane in the second game of a Conference USA series at Cougar Field on Friday night.

Tulane jumped out to a 2-0 lead early before the Cougars tied the game in the second inning with a pair of runs. In the fifth, Rob Johnson laced a one-out single off the glove of Tulane first baseman Wes Swackhamer and raced all the way from first base when Cole Bruce followed with a double into the right-center gap.

That would be all the run support that Cougar hurlers Garrett Mock, Rickey Putman and Brandon Roznovsky would need. Mock improved to 4-5 after holding the Green Wave to only two runs (one earned) off four this with three strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Putman entered the game in the eighth inning and held Tulane hitless over 1.1 innings, while Roznovsky threw the final 0.2 innings to collect his team-leading ninth save. Tulane threatened in the ninth inning when Tommy Manzella drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on Brian Boguesvic's single through the right side.

But, playing catcher, Johnson ended the rally and the game when he picked off Bogusevic, who wandered too far away from first base, to send most of the 1,650 fans in attendance into hysteria.

Cole Bruce batted 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI, while Thanos Papavasiliou batted 2-for-3 with a run. Johnson batted 1-for-3 with a run and extended his hitting streak to a career-best 12 consecutive games.

Travis Tully went 0-for-5 and saw his UH season- and career-best hitting streak snapped at 21 games. It was the fourth longest hitting streak in school history.

Matt Barket went 2-for-4 with a double and run, and Bogusevic batted 2-for-3 with a run for Tulane, who managed only five hits in the game.

The Cougars wrap up their regular season when they meet the Green Wave at 1 p.m., Saturday at Cougar Field. The game can be heard live on KAXF 88.3 FM or over the Internet at www.UHCougars.com with Nick Torina and Pat Cauley calling the action. Senior righthander Matt Varner (7-3, 3.91) is scheduled to throw for the Cougars, while Tulane is slated to throw sophomore southpaw J.R. Crowel (7-1, 3.30).

Tulane grabbed the lead in its first at bat when Matt Barket scored from third base on an infield groundout.

The Green Wave doubled their lead in the second inning when Bogusevic scored from third on a double play.

In the bottom of the frame, the Cougars rapped out three hits to knot the game at 2-2. Bruce led off with a single up the middle and moved all the way to third on Papavasiliou's single up the middle. Two batters later, Nick Bott blasted a double to deep center field to cut the Tulane lead in half.

Matt Farrington then lifted a fly ball into center field to score Papavasiliou for the Cougars' final run of the frame.
