Hattiesburg, Miss. - University of Houston baseball players Michael Goodnight and David Murphy guided the Cougars to a 4-1 win over UAB on Friday morning during the third day of play at the Conference USA Championship at Pete Taylor Park. With the win, Houston will advance to the next round and face-off against cross-town rival Rice at 4 p.m.

Houston has now advanced to the semi-finals of the conference tournament for the fifth time in the last six years and the eighth time in 13 years.

Goodnight pitched a career-high 8.1 innings, allowing six hits, with a career-high 10 strikeouts. He held the Blazers to just one run; in addition he also only allowed one extra base hit.

Murphy gave the Cougars a 4-0 lead in the David Murphy in the fourth inning, hitting the first home run of his career. The ball sailed over the left field fence, giving all Cougar regular starters at least one home run this season. It was also Houston's first home run since Jake Runte's long ball against East Carolina on May 10.

Including Murphy's leadoff home run in the fourth, Houston put its first six lead off batters on base to start the game.

For the second game in the tournament, Houston scored on their initial at bat. Caleb Ramsey reached base on a fielder's choice and with two outs on the board stole second and advanced to third in a throwing error by the UAB catcher. He would then go on to score the first Cougar run of the game on a Chase Dempsay single up the middle. Dempsay then added to the UH run total, scoring after a Chris Wallace single over second base.

Dempsay then hit double down the left field line, his 15th double of the season, scoring Ramsey in the third inning to increase the lead, 3-0. Ramsey led off the inning with a single to left field.

UAB finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring a run off Digger Towe's double down the right field line.
