Baseball Eliminated at C-USA Tournament, Falls to Rice, 7-2

Hattiesburg, Miss. - The University of Houston baseball team was eliminated from the Conference USA Championship, falling to the Rice Owls, 7-2, at Pete Taylor Park. Despite the loss, Chris Wallace hit his ninth home run of the season in the fourth inning. The ball sailed over the right field fence for the Cougars second home run of the afternoon. During the morning game, David Murphy also hit a home run in the Cougars 4-1 win over UAB. The Owls scored first in the contest, posting two run in the top of the second inning. Michael Fuda and Sultzbaugh hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a Ryan Lewis double to right field. They added a third run in the third inning when Diego Seastrunk scored off a Sultzbaugh single, after a leadoff single of his own. Houston cut the Rice lead to one, 3-2, in the sixth inning. With runners at the corners, David Murphy singled through the left side to plate Caleb Ramsey, who led off the inning with a single to right field. But the Owls, answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs off an inside the park home run by Chad Mozingo, while scoring Anthony Rendon, who reached base on an error. Rice then extended their lead once again to five, 7-2, in the eighth inning, scoring an additional two runs. Both runs were scored with two outs on the board. On the mound, Mo Wiley earned the start going 2.2 innings, allowing six hits and all three runs, while striking out three batters. William Kankel came in relief to pitch 3.2 innings, a career long in relief, allowing four hits, two runs with a strikeout. Chris Wright and Donnie Joseph closed out the game pitching the final 2.2 innings, allowing two hits, two runs and one strikeout. With the loss Houston ends the season with a 27-31 overall record.
