Cougars Score Five In Ninth Inning To Defeat ECU, 8-5, In C-USA Championship Opener

PEARL, Miss. - The University of Houston baseball team scored five runs in the ninth inning to overcome a 5-3 deficit, knocking off East Carolina, 8-5, Wednesday night in their opening game of the 2011 Conference USA Baseball Championship presented by Trustmark.
The Cougars' ninth inning rally started with back-to-back doubles from freshman Jonathan Davis and sophomore Chase Jensen. Senior Joel Ansley tied the score 5-5 with a single to right field before moving to third base on a single by junior John Cannon. Junior Codey Morehouse laid a bunt down the first base line, giving Ansley a chance to score and advancing Cannon to second base. Freshman Landon Appling kept the inning going with an RBI single to center field, before a failed pickoff attempt allowed him to reach third base. He would go on to score on a wild pitch to give UH an 8-5 lead.
UH improves to 26-30 on the season and 7-3 all-time against the Pirates in C-USA Tournament play.
With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Houston broke a scoreless tie and took a 1-0 lead when Appling reached base on a hit by a pitch, sending in Jensen from third base. On the next at bat, Still singled to left center, scoring Ansley and senior Caleb Ramsey's sacrifice fly to left field put the Cougars up 3-0.
The Pirates tied the score in the fifth inning on Corey Thompson's three-run home run to left center before taking the lead on a single by Ben Fultz and a wild pitch by junior Jordan Mannisto.
Still finish the night 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Jensen, Ansley and Cannon scored two runs in the win. Junior Matt Creel went four innings in his fifth start. He gave up three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Mannisto came in to earn the win, pitching five innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
