HOUSTON --Houston Baseball wasn't able to overcome a strong showing by Iowa as the Cougars fell 6-3 in their NCAA Houston Regional opener at Schroeder Park Friday evening.
The Cougars fell to 40-20 on the year and 0-1 in the Houston Regional with the loss, while Iowa improved to 39-20 and 1-0 in NCAA play.
Houston will face (2) Baylor at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday at Schroeder Park in an elimination game. (4) Iowa will meet (3) Texas A&M at 7 p.m. Saturday evening.

Houston was held to just six hits in its NCAA opener vs. Iowa, led by juniors Corey Julks (2x4, R) and Connor Hollis (2x4) -- each with a two-hit game. Junior Cooper Coldiron drove in a run and tallied a hit, while sophomore Joe Davis had a hit and run. Junior Jake Scheiner plated a run on a sac fly.
Houston starter Trey Cumbie went 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits and two walks with two strikeouts. The southpaw was tagged with just his second loss of the year, falling to 10-2.
Junior reliever Joey Pulido took over in the sixth and finished with 1.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing one run on two walks and a strikeout.
Sophomore Aaron Fletcher tossed 2.0 innings, allowing a run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
2nd | Iowa took the early lead with a run in the second inning on a leadoff single, walk and RBI-single for the 1-0 lead.
4th | The Hawkeyes used two fourth-inning doubles to extend their lead to 2-0.
Houston scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Julks doubled with one out and moved to third base on a single by Davis. A sacrifice bunt by Coldiron scored Julks to make it 2-1 Iowa. A wild pitch would eventually allow Davis to score to tie the game at 2-2.
5th | Iowa scored a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
Houston responded with a run when junior Connor Wong reached on an error and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Scheiner to make it 4-3.
8th | Iowa added two late insurance runs in the eighth to go up 6-3 late, which proved to be enough to earn a win.
Iowa tallied 13 hits, led by Ben Norman, who went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Mitchell Ben went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Starter Ryan Erickson earned the win, improving to 4-3, after allowing two earned runs on four hits and four walks.
