Box Score

AUSTIN, Texas - Texas pitcher Alan Bomer scattered seven hits over 7.1 innings while allowing only two runs to score as the Longhorns took a 5-2 win over the University of Houston on Sunday in the third and deciding game of the NCAA Super Regional at Austin.

With the win, UT advanced to the NCAA College World Series with a first-round match-up against second-ranked Rice. UH ended the year at 48-17 overall and posted the third best winning percentage in school single-season history.

Although UH jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, UT took the lead with two runs in the second inning and added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to post their second straight win over the Cougars in the best-of-three series.

Keith Whatley batted 2-for-4 with a run in his final collegiate game, while Brett Cooley went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Making his first start since his freshman season in 1999, UH senior Nathan Mitchell scattered four hits and three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work but collected the loss to fall to 5-2 this season. Bomer improved to 10-3 with the win.

Texas (53-15) tallied 10 hits in the game with Ryan Hubele going 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Dustin Majewski and Kalani Napoleon also added two hits apiece.

The Cougars took advantage of two hits and a key UT infield error to score the game's first run in their first at-bat. Michael Bourn led off with a sharp single up the middle. Whatley ripped another ground ball up the middle, which UT starter Alan Bomer snared, but Bomer's throw to first baseman Jeff Ontiveros was wild and allowed Bourn to race to third base.

After a strikeout, Cooley ripped a two-out double down the left field line to plate Bourn and hand the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Texas scored twice to capture the lead for the first time. Ontiveros was hit by a Mitchell offering to lead off the frame and moved to second base after Brandon Fahey walked. Both runners moved up on a passed ball, and Ontiveros scored the Longhorn's first run on Matt Rosenberg's RBI-groundout. Fahey scored the go-ahead run one batter later when Ryan Hubele slapped a single to left field.

The Longhorns added to their lead in the fifth inning. After two outs to start the inning, Omar Quintanilla reached on a UH infield error and moved to second on Majewski's single, ending Mitchell's day. Ontiveros then ripped a single through the left side of the infield to score Quintanilla and give the Longhorns a 3-1 lead.

UH threatened in the sixth inning when singles by Whatley and Cooley put runners on first and second base with only one out. However, Bomer forced two infield foul-outs to end the Cougar rally.

In the bottom of the sixth, UT expanded its lead with another run. Hubele started the rally with a single up the middle and moved into scoring position after a walk to Napoleon. After a UH pitching change and infield foul-out, Quintanilla stroked a single through the left side of the infield to plate Hubele.

Chris Carmichael gave the Longhorns another run in the seventh inning with an RBI triple down the right field line that plated Brandon Fahey. That run ended UH reliever Jesse Crain's consecutive inning scoreless streak at 35.2 innings - the second longest in UH history - and was the first earned run allowed by the Boulder, Colo., native in 36.2 innings during the season.

In the eighth inning, the Cougars posted their final run of the series. Keith Whatley blasted a double off the center field wall to end Bomer's game and moved to third base on a balk from UT reliever Huston Street. Chris Snyder then lifted a fly ball to center field that plated Whatley and capped the Cougar scoring.
